Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg has said that he cried “at the wrong times” during the filming of the sitcom’s final season. The police procedural comedy series first premiered on FOX back in September 2013 but earned an especially passionate following after its surprise cancellation in 2018. Fan outcry on social media led to Brooklyn Nine-Nine being quickly picked up by NBC, where its eighth and final season premieres on August 12.

Co-created by Parks and Recreation’s Mike Schur and Dan Goor, Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the antics of immature yet talented detective Jake Peralta (Samberg) as he clashes with the obstinate and detail-orientated Captain Holt (Andre Braugher). The sitcom has been praised over the years for its ability to remain light-hearted and funny while also broaching more serious subjects with respect and poignancy. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has also earned a very emotionally invested fanbase due to the strong relationships the characters have built, most notably the workplace romance between Jake and Amy (Melissa Fumero).

Now, Samberg has revealed that emotions were also running high for the cast while filming the sitcom’s final episodes. In an interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the actor said things got “emotionally rough” towards the end of filming due to the cast’s strong bond. Samberg also joked about crying “at the wrong times,” saying he got emotional after hearing one of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s most famous running jokes for the last time. Read his full quote below:

“As it got towards the end, it got really emotionally rough because we all realized it was truly ending, and we all love each other and have been spending all that time together for eight years. There was a lot of crying at the wrong times. There are scenes where you could argue, like, you should cry. And then there’s other stuff where it’s like…I just fell out and I’d be like 'I just realized it’s the last time Terry is gonna say he loves yogurt.'”

After eight years, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has built up an impressive roster of running gags that are sure to be referenced at least one more time in the final season. The official season 8 poster already made good use of the sitcom’s most infamous joke, and the season as a whole is being promoted as “one last ride.” After spending so much time with the 99th precinct, it’s sure to get emotional as the last episodes air, whether it’s over something genuinely sad or just one final call-back to a fan-favorite joke.

Considering that Brooklyn Nine-Nine very easily could have ended with season 5, the three extra seasons that the show has been granted now feel like an epic victory lap for the comedy. Though the final season does still have some loose ends to tie up, its main focus will surely be on giving a proper goodbye to the characters fans know and love. Knowing that it was so emotional for the cast to film only makes it more certain that there will be no wrong times to cry during Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s final episodes.
