Brooklyn Nine-Nine has survived cancellation and a transfer to a new network. And with a seventh season on the way, the show is doing better than ever. All thanks to the devoted fans of the series. Over the course of six seasons, Michael Schur’s hit comedy has introduced viewers to some of the most beloved and hilarious characters on television.

However, not all of the characters are as universally adored as Andre Braugher’s Captain Raymond Holt. Some characters wish to harm the 99, while others occasionally irk fans the wrong way. Regardless, all of these characters, hated or loved, are well-written additions to the show. Here are Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s most hated supporting characters.

Roger Peralta

Jake’s untrustworthy and inconsiderate father infrequently pops back into Jake’s life, usually for selfish reasons. Like when Roger tricks Jake into investigating who framed him. Roger Peralta is the reason why Raymond Holt is more of a father figure to Jake than Jake’s actual father.

Although Roger has been heading towards a redemption arc over the years by reconnecting with his son and his ex-wife, it will take a while until Jake fully forgives him.

Charles Boyle

Charles Boyle

This might be a controversial choice, but it needs to be said. Charles Boyle can sometimes come across as irritating and unrelentingly obnoxious. Yes, Boyle obviously cares deeply about his best friend, Jake, and by association Amy, but some of his remarks are borderline cringey and his incessant intrusion in Jake and Amy’s private life is occasionally overbearing.

That being said, the show would not be the same without Boyle and his enduring chemistry with Jake. Their dynamic is as integral to the heart of the show as Jake and Amy’s relationship, but Boyle could really benefit from simmering down on the creepiness

Teddy Wells

Amy’s ex-boyfriend infamously loves pilsners just about as much as he loves Amy Santiago. Teddy’s unrequited love for Amy constantly leads to attempts to break Jake and Amy apart.

From proposing to Amy right in front of his current girlfriend to trying to object to her wedding, Teddy will never stop trying to win Amy back, even if she is a married woman now. Let’s hope Teddy finds love soon and hopefully that person is not Amy, because Jake and Amy forever!

Gina Linetti

Another controversial choice, 99’s civilian administrator, Gina Linetti is arguably one of the show’s funniest characters. Her quick wit and her constant obsession with her self-image are always guaranteed to generate a laugh. However, Gina’s narcissism and general apathy towards everyone can irritate some viewers.

Even if Gina seems like a complete narcissist, she has a softer kinder side that displays her deeper affection towards her co-workers. Whether you love her or hate her, her departure has clearly left a void in the show.

Jason "C.J." Stentley

Another appointed replacement for Captain Holt. Captain CJ, played by Ken Marino, is not only a complete moron he is quite possibly the worst captain the 99 has ever had. Extremely unqualified for his position, CJ allows everyone to walk over him, despite his authority as captain.

Yet, it is only when the squad disobeys his direct orders and travels to Florida to save Holt does CJ finally grow a backbone. As punishment, CJ transfers the entire squad to the dreaded night shift. Not cool CJ!

Seth Dozerman

Even if the character is played by the consistently funny Bill Hader, anyone that dares to replace Captain Holt is already automatically hated. From the start, Seth Dozerman started his short-lived tenure as captain by restricting the antics of not only Jake but everyone in the precinct. Captain Dozerman's love for workplace efficiency even led to the implementation of so-called Dozer-pad tablets, which monitors deadlines and workplace behavior.

But the worst sin the character commits is trying to separate the budding relationship between Jake and Amy. It took three long seasons for those two to hook up and there was no way fans would allow anyone to separate them, especially Holt’s replacement.

John Kelly

Commissioner John Kelly, not to be confused with the show’s other John Kelly, is the newest character on this list. Kelly becomes the police commissioner in season six and quickly proves to be one of the precinct’s greatest antagonists.

Since Captain Holt constantly objects to Kelly’s policies, Kelly utilizes everything in his power to make the 99 a living hell. He closes the 99th precinct’s bottom floor, uncomfortably overcrowding the 4th floor. He then slashes the precinct’s budget, forcing them to use 1-ply toilet paper. Needless to say, Captain Holt would make a much better police commissioner.

Melanie Hawkins

Melanie Hawkins in Brooklyn Nine Nine

Lieutenant Melanie Hawkins, played by Gina Gershon, is a well-respected NYPD lieutenant. She even likes Die Hard and is thoroughly impressed by the police work of her idols, Jake and Rosa. What is not to love about her character? The problem is that she is a dirty cop and criminal mastermind conspiring to frame both Jake and Rosa.

And to make matters worse, for the most part, she succeeds in her plan. Jake and Rosa get thrown in jail and their reputations tarnished. Luckily, Hawkins eventually gets her comeuppance and Jake and Rosa are restored to the precinct.

The Vulture

Dean Winter’s Keith Pembrooke, otherwise known as “The Vulture”, is the character that fans just love to hate. Vulture’s arrogant, creepy, and misogynistic personality is the source of endless laughs on the show. Every time Vulture shows up his mission is to basically ruin the lives of the squad.

From stealing the squad’s best cases right under them to snatching Jake and Amy’s wedding for his own wedding. Sure, Vulture is an obnoxious jerk, but he is one of the show’s best recurring characters.

Madeline Wuntch

The Vulture, Madeline Wuntch, and Jason Stentley on Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Kyra Sedgwick’s Madeline Wuntch is the cunning and manipulative commissioner of the NYPD. According to Holt, she is the devil, a goat, a bat a forked-tongued lizard witch, a talking raisin, the list goes on. Aside from her ongoing and hilarious rivalry with Holt, she is undeniably the show’s greatest antagonist.

Every time she appears, trouble is bound to follow for both Holt and the rest of the precinct. Now as commissioner, who knows what she is conspiring against the squad in Season 7. But one thing is for certain, her future interactions with Holt will bring fresh hilarious insults and conniving schemes.
