Netflix's Bridgerton had all of its many fans buzzing over the drama and romance that flourished in the first season. In the very last episode, the identity of the famous Lady Whistledown was finally revealed - and fans are definitely still raving over and debating it.

However, for the whole season, viewers of this show were following in Eloise's footsteps and were trying to unmask the writer themselves. There are some characters that also peaked their interest, and at one point, could have been Lady Whistledown instead of Penelope Featherington. It's time to reflect on who had fans fooled.

Lady Danbury

Bridgerton Lady Danbury at Ball

Lady Danbury convincingly told Eloise that it was certainly not her, but fans weren't totally convinced. Lady Danbury is a single woman with prestige and a great reputation. Plus, she's certainly known for being mysterious and a tad curious.

She's incredibly well-spoken, and has an interest in all the drama that takes place in the ton. Some fans were fooled by Lady Danbury, and it would have definitely made sense if she was the lady writer.

Mrs. Varley

Bridgerton Mrs. Varley

For a short time, Eloise was convinced that Lady Whistledown was someone on the house staff. While she was digging into her own household, fans were also thinking about Mrs. Varley, who is the right-hand woman to Portia Featherington.

She had ears everywhere, and the Featherington girls are truly nothing but gossips. However, by the end of that episode, fans were pretty convinced Lady Whistledown's identity lay in another direction.

Portia Featherington

Bridgerton Portia Featherington

Fans were keen on pinning anyone as Lady Whistledown, and for a time, Portia actually made a fair bit of sense. She had a motive to hurt Daphne, given her jealousy of Daphne being declared the 'diamond of the season.' And always seemed ot be attempting to gain some more attention for her own daughters.

Plus, she attended every social event and had a strained relationship with her husband. However, viewers ditched the idea that the writer could be Portia when Marina's condition was revealed. It did nothing but ruin the Featherington name, even if she didn't actually care about Marina.

Eloise Bridgerton

Eloise is a fan favorite - and before Eloise undertook the position to unmask the real Lady Whistledown, fans definitely had their suspicions it was her. There was even a cute conversation between her brother, Benedict, and her, where he accuses of her being the writer.

Eloise is intelligent, loves to write, and definitely hates all the romance and drama of the social season. However, it clearly wasn't her, after the Queen enlisted her to find Lady Whistledown. It would have made sense, though.

Lady Violet Bridgerton

Bridgerton Lady Violet

This one might not be as suspicious, mainly because Violet has a heart of gold and doesn't usually succumb to the gossip and drama of the ton. However, she was one that also never really had her named crossed off as being unable to be Lady Whistledown.

She's a single woman with a stunning reputation, and she attended every event written about, not to mention the spotlight was always on her children rather than herself. With the gossip about Daphne and Simon, it could be argued she wanted the best for Daphne. Alas, it clearly wasn't Violet.

Marina Thompson

Bridgerton Marina Thompson at Ball

Eloise knew that Lady Whistledown was somewhat of an outsider. They had ears everywhere while still being unattached from anyone. Marina fit this bill pretty well, and fans knew she also liked to write letters and was pretty well-spoken.

Obviously, though, when Lady Whistledown revealed her pregnancy, fans dropped all suspicions. There was no reason that Marina would bring that kind of doom upon herself.

Queen Charlotte

Bridgerton Queen Charlotte With Dogs

Before Queen Charlotte adamantly insisted on the ruin of Lady Whistledown, she actually would have been a good choice for fans to suspect. She always attended the ton's events and had staff everywhere to listen to the drama.

She was unsuspecting and was a rich and powerful woman that could get away with just about anything. She hated Lady Whistledown's guts (especially after stuff came out about the Queen herself) pretty overtly, but it could have only been a clever ruse.

Cressida Cowper

Bridgerton Cressida Cowper At Ball With Her Mother

If there was anyone with a motive to destroy Daphne's reputation as the diamond of the season, it was certainly Cressida Cowper. She was angry at Daphne for getting in the way of her romance with the Prince and likely experienced some jealousy.

Of course, while fans knew she had motive, it became slowly more evident that writing was likely not Cressida's passion.

Genevieve Delacroix

Bridgerton Genevieve Delacroix at Modiste

There was a point where even Eloise herself was convinced that Lady Whistledown was the modiste, Genevieve Delacroix. In fact, Genevieve didn't do much to really sway this opinion, and rather confused Eloise and the fans watching.

She would have been a great Lady Whistledown - with ample opportunity to listen to the gossip of every woman in the ton while she dressed them in their gorgeous gowns. Of course, it was only a ruse, and Eloise mistakenly pinned her as the writer. However, she was a prime suspect.

Penelope Featherington

Bridgerton Penelope Featherington At Home With Sisters

If there was actually one character that was pretty convincingly not Lady Whistledown, it's Penelope. Fans definitely speculated, especially when the news came out about Marina's pregnancy. She was in love with Colin and had a reason to out her.

However, fans pushed that thought away because it also ruined the reputation of her family. It was a bold move. Plus, Lady Whistledown also threatened Daphne's reputation, and Penelope and Eloise were best friends. She threw everyone off - and snuffed everyone's suspicions. But in the end, she could have been, and was, Lady Whistledown herself.
