Bridgerton Season 3 Might Not Follow The Books, Teases Shonda Rhimes

Bridgerton producer Shonda Rhimes has teased the identity of season 3's main character, stating that the next Bridgerton protagonists' identity is a spoiler. The Netflix romantic period drama series follows the Bridgerton family as they navigate the high society lifestyle of Regency-era London. In line with Julia Quinn's original novel series on which the show is based, Bridgerton season 1 was led by Phoebe Dynevor's Daphne Bridgerton, while season 2 follows Jonathan Bailey's Anthony Bridgerton.

In season 1 of the hit Netflix series, Daphne developed a tumultuous romance with renowned bachelor Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). In season 2, Anthony is at the center, as well as his relationship with Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran's siblings, Kate and Edwina Sharma. Many were disappointed when Page left Bridgerton after season 1, and rumors of a potential season 2 cameo were shut down by Rhimes. Now, Dynevor's Daphne will take on a supportive role for her siblings as the focus shifts from her and Simon's marriage. While each Bridgerton season is expected to follow this pattern and have a different sibling as the main character, Rhimes isn't ready to reveal who will be the focus of Bridgerton season 3 now that season 2 has been released.

Speaking to ET Online ahead of the Bridgerton season 2's release on March 25, Rhimes and showrunner Chris Van Dusen were asked about how they would approach future seasons of the show. Rhimes stated that while the writers are feeling creative, work on season 3 was well in progress, and more would be revealed about the series in the future. Despite work being underway, Rhimes stated that she was not ready to reveal season 3's lead character, as it could be a "spoiler." Check out Rhimes' response below.

"Got a little bit creative so we're already hard at work writing season 3. ... That is already in progress and you'll see. Give it time... I can't tell you! That is a spoiler, I can't."

Bridgerton siblings looking in the same direction

With Bridgerton season 3 and 4 already confirmed, the lives of the Bridgerton siblings are set to further be explored. In Quinn's Bridgerton novel series, each book is centered on a specific sibling, with season 1 adapting Daphne's tale from The Duke and I, and season 2 taking from The Viscount Who Loved Me. The third novel in the series, An Offer From a Gentleman, followed second son Benedict, while the fourth novel ,Romancing Mister Bridgerton, followed third son Colin. However, despite the source material's release order, Rhimes has suggested Bridgerton may deviate from the Quinn's original structure and follow a different sibling's story instead.

With Rhimes avoiding revealing the next protagonist before Bridgerton season 2, it's possible that the season may lay the groundwork for future episodes by placing greater focus on one of Anthony's siblings alongside him. Van Dusen has also hinted that season 2 would see Eloise play a much bigger role, so perhaps season 3 will ultimately surprise viewers and shift focus onto the younger Bridgerton sister. Ultimately, with Rhimes already so willing to deviate from the source material's structure, it's also possible that season 2 may not completely conclude Anthony's story, and instead see Bridgerton season 3 extend his tale with a new and exciting take.
