Chris Van Dusen responds to questions about whether Kate and Edwina Sharma return in Bridgerton season 3. Produced by Shonda Rhimes and her company Shondaland, the romantic period series is among Netflix's most talked-about original series. Now moving on to work on other projects, Bridgerton series creator Van Dusen adapted the book series by Julia Quinn. Bridgerton season 1 aired on Netflix in December 2020. While production delays due to the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the release of season 2, it finally debuted on March 25.

In Bridgerton season 1, the primary focus was the growing relationship between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon, the Duke of Hastings (Rege-Jean Page). Sticking to the structure of Quinn's books, season 2 then switched focus to the next Bridgerton sibling, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), and his secret love with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). Plenty of future season potential remains for the Netflix production with the Bridgerton family's remaining siblings: Violet (Ruth Gemmell), Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Benedict (Luke Thompson), Colin (Luke Newton), Gregory (Will Tilston), and Hyacinth (Florence Hunt).

In an interview with EW, Van Dusen responds to the question of whether or not Kate and Edwina (Charithra Chandran) Sharma will return to Bridgerton for season 3. The series creator's response is "All I can say is I hope so." He and other cast and crew are pleased with where Edwina's character finds herself at the end of season 2, having marked out her own desires and feelings, ready to move on and start a new life on her own terms. He, along with Simone Ashley, who played Kate Sharma, are both happy with Kate's season conclusion, and Ashley is looking forward to seeing Kate and Anthony in their new, post-wedding life.

Kate and Edwina from Bridgerton

So far, the Bridgerton series on Netflix has kept in line with the progression of the original books, following the first two siblings of the Bridgerton family as they enter society and find love. If the show keeps following the book chronology, then Bridgerton season 3 will focus on Benedict and his increasingly experimental social life of painting nudes and attending sexy artist parties. Another possibility is that Rhimes and her writers will switch the order and instead focus on Colin Bridgerton's slowly developing connection to Penelope Featherington AKA Lady Whistledown (Nicola Coughlan).

Besides the plot lines of the Bridgerton siblings and their love lives, a fascinating element of the show is the Queen and King's relationship. Every major courtship on the show happens under the watchful eye of Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte, who is focused on maintaining a spotless reputation as facilitator and matchmaker of high society in London. With the increasing social power of the anonymous writer Lady Whistledown, the Queen feels her reputation is being threatened. In season 1 and then again in Bridgerton season 2, the King's deteriorating memory is shown to be devastating to the Queen's personal life, forcing her to live in solitude with her husband, barely able to recognize her or even what year it is. The Sharma sisters are among a handful of people who know this huge secret about the King, which makes their potential return to Bridgerton season 3 even more compelling. Bridgerton season 2 is streaming now on Netflix.
