The series, which is based on Julia Quinn's romance novels of the same name, is set in Regency era London and with each passing season, focuses on a different member of the titular family as they find love, narrated by the scandalous gossip columnist Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews).Bridgerton season 1 focused on the ruse-turned-fiery romance between the eldest daughter Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and the dashing rake Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). The second season shifts focus to the eldest son Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) as he enters a tumultuous love triangle between sisters Kate (Simone Ashley) and Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran). Bridgerton season 3, which began production earlier this summer ahead of its 2023 release, will focus on the blossoming romance between Colin and Penelope, the latter of which was revealed to be using the Lady Whistledown pseudonym at the end of season 1.Now, as Bridgerton season 3 continues filming, an old set photo has emerged teasing Penelope and Colin's romance. Shared by the show's official Twitter account, the season 2 photo depicts Coughlan and Newton dressed in casual clothes while behind-the-scenes on the Netflix production, with Dynevor making a funny face in the background. By focusing on the relationship between Penelope and Colin (or "Polin" as fans have dubbed them), Bridgerton season 3 will buck tradition by skipping ahead to the fourth book in Quinn's series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which is about Colin and Penelope's romance. This suggests the show might be ignoring the events of the third book, An Offer from a Gentleman, which focuses on Benedict Bridgerton's courtship and marriage. The two romances could unfold simultaneously in season 3, though that is not the indication given by early teasers and BTS photos like this one. Besides, Bridgerton will have plenty of time to tell Benedict's story in later seasons.
The prospect of a Polin romance has been very tantalizing for many fans, and the show's marketing team knows exactly what they're doing by sharing teases like this on social media. Sure, fans would have likely preferred to see Coughlan and Newton in costume and in character for the upcoming season, but they will have to settle for this BTS photo for now. As production on Bridgerton season 3 heats up over the coming months, there should be plenty more teases to come.
