The Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story now has an official trailer and release date. Bridgerton is Netflix's smash hit Regency-era romance series based on the Julia Quinn novels of the same name that has currently aired two seasons with a third and fourth on the way. Queen Charlotte will follow the early days of the iconic royal character, played in the original series by Golda Rosheuvel, who will return in the prequel alongside India Amarteifio as a younger version of the character.

Today, Netflix unveiled the first official trailer for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Along with the trailer comes the official pronouncement that the series will premiere on the streaming platform on May 4. Although it takes place over less than a minute, the trailer promises that Queen Charlotte will be just as steamy and dramatic as the original Bridgerton series, following her courtship and eventual rise to the throne.

As the trailer reveals, much of the season will revolve around Charlotte's romance with King George III (Corey Mylchreest). When love, lust, and power come into play, things will just get more and more complicated. The road to becoming the regal figure that is Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte will likely be long and arduous.

In addition to Queen Charlotte, several other Bridgerton characters will appear, both as their older and younger selves. This includes Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury, with Arsema Thomas playing her younger self. Also on hand are Ruth Gemmell as Bridgerton matriarch Violet (played younger by Connie Jenkins-Greig) and Hugh Sachs as Queen Charlotte's secretary Brimsley (played younger by Sam Clemmett).

So far, there has not been word about whether or not the Bridgerton prequel may get any additional seasons. However, considering the fact that the trailer already shows her coronation, this may not be entirely likely. While the future of the franchise seems secure for the time being, further spinoffs may focus in on other characters in the wider universe.
