Netflix's Bridgerton is all about high-society characters looking for love and nuptials in Regency-era England — and matters of the heart can lead to some incredibly vexing behavior.

When it comes to the social season, emotions are certainly running high, and everyone has their own desires and goals to achieve. From being selfish to close-minded to arrogant or careless, there are a lot of reasons why the main characters on Bridgerton are extremely frustrating.

Updated on May 5, 2022, by Lynn Gibbs: After Bridgerton's second season was released in March, fans had a new set of characters to love and be frustrated by. The beauty of Bridgerton is that viewers get to see the Bridgertons, Featheringstons, and more rise and fall each season, shedding more light on their character. As many characters as there are to love, there are just as many to hate. From Eloise Bridgerton being seen as annoying to the latest insufferable Featherington, fans agree that many are frustrating.

Colin Bridgerton

Colin Bridgerton really comes into his own in season 2. In season 1, he is excited to marry quickly but when that doesn't end well, he travels the world until viewers see him again in season 2.

What makes Colin one of the more frustrating characters is that he is unaware of Penelope's feelings for him. In season 2, he tries to be more mature by making an investment in Jack Featherington's made-up job but eventually sees the light when he finds out it's a scam.

Eloise Bridgerton

Eloise in Bridgerton Season 2

Eloise is a pretty incredible character, and she stands out among the rest. With her intelligence, fire, and passion, Eloise is one of the most intelligent Bridgerton characters, and fans are applauding her resistance to the traditional role of the woman.

However, Eloise isn't without her flaws. She can be snarky and rude, and fans don't think she should hate Daphne in season 1 simply because she doesn't agree with her values and ambitions. Eloise can be a bit blunt and hateful, and it's upsetting to see her friendship with Penelope fall apart in season 2.

Simon Basset

Bridgerton Simon sitting at the breakfast table with his eyebrows raised

Fans swoon over season 1's Simon Basset, but the Duke is far from perfect. Some of Simon's best qualities are that he has a heart of gold, passion, and good intentions, but his mysterious persona and brooding façade make him a bit frustrating.

Viewers wanted him to tell Daphne how he feels in regards to children, and they were even more frustrated that he let their silence go on for so long. For fans, it was his lack of communication that was the most frustrating.

Queen Charlotte

Bridgerton Queen Charlotte sitting with her dogs

There's some sympathy due for Queen Charlotte, and the queen of the ton is also praised for her strong and fiery spirit. Still, she can be pretty arrogant and selfish, and it's hard not to be at least a bit annoyed by this character.

From using Eloise one day to completely ditching her the next as she tries to stop Lady Whistledown in her tracks, fans feel a bit frustrated with the queen's mercurial disposition. In season 2, she makes the wedding between Anthony and Edwina all about herself when they ultimately call off their nuptials.

Marina Thompson

Bridgerton Marina Thompson being asked to dance at the ball

There's a lot of debate over Marina Thompson. In her defense, Marina is a strong, independent, and ambitious woman. She is determined to take her life into her own hands and not be forced into situations she doesn't want for herself.

However, Marina is also a bit harsh and selfish. She tries to be a good friend to Penelope, but she acts superior to her, especially when it comes to Colin. Marina makes one of the worst decisions in Bridgerton when she is pregnant with another man's child and tries to quickly marry Colin to pass the baby off as his. When the Bridgertons find out, Marina leaves London. In season 2, Marina is married and in a better position but is still cynical over love and loss.

Penelope Featherington

Penelope starts as an innocent, kind, and carefree character. However, she becomes a bit obsessed with Colin and ends up being a terrible friend to Marina in season 1. First loves are hard, but Penelope behaves selfishly and should know better when it comes to her behavior.

Plus, the final reveal of her true identity as Lady Whistledown is both shocking and frustrating. Not only did she lie to Eloise, but she also put her whole family to shame. In season 2, Penelope stoops to a new low as Lady Whistledown when she throws Eloise under the bus, and Eloise finally found out who she truly is.

Cressida Cowper

Bridgerton Cressida and Lady Cowper looking mad at the ball

This arrogant character isn't onscreen a lot, but Cressida does manage to be a source of frustration in the time she is given. Mostly, fans see that she tries to sabotage Daphne in season 1 and Prudence in season 2.

Cressida thinks she's the better choice for season 1's Prince Friedrich, but she also threatens Daphne's entire life over him. Though Cressida's disappointment at Daphne overshadowing her, is understandable, her actions in retaliation are harsh. In season 2, her over-confidence in a relationship with Jack Featherington prevents her from seeing who he truly is. Her manipulative personality and bullying ways made her one of the least likable characters in Bridgerton.

Kate Sharma

Kate Sharma looking to the distance in Bridgerton

Season 2's Kate Sharma is poised, intelligent, and had some of the best quotes in Bridgerton. As the eldest sister to Edwina, Kate's main purpose is to find her sister a mate so that she's taken care of for life. Although Kate is older, she is single by choice and never felt compelled to marry.

However, Kate's frustrating qualities kick in when she meets Anthony Bridgerton. The connection between them is immediate but Kate refuses to give in to her feelings because of her sister's similar feelings for Anthony. It's hard for fans to watch Kate ignore her connection to Anthony instead of being honest with Edwina from the start.

Portia Featherington

Bridgerton Portia Featherington standing by the pond at the picnic

Portia seemingly wants the best for her daughters, but she doesn't do a whole lot to understand their wishes and needs. From constantly throwing Penelope in a yellow dress to badgering them in the social season, she's overbearing.

However, the most frustrating things about Portiaare her pompous attitude and her harsh actions towards Marina in season 1 and Jack in season 2. Making a fake note from Marina's lover is unforgivable. In Bridgerton season 3, fans hope that Portia is humbled in a way that alters her behavior as a mother and neighbor.

Jack Featherington

Jack Featherington smiling on Bridgerton

Jack Featherington arrives at the family estate in season 2. At first, he seems harmless enough and appears to fulfill his duty as the man of the house, paying off Portia and her daughter's debts. But as the season continues, fans find out Jack's true intentions.

Jack ends up not having any money at all and is as broke as Portia. However, he's a con artist who tries pulling a fast one on the wealthy men of the ton. In the end, it is an unpopular opinion to respect Jack Featherington, and Portia ultimately kicks him out.

Lord Featherington

Bridgerton Lord Featherington reading the paper

Lord Featherington was without a doubt worthy of many headshakes. He had no idea what's going on, ever, and he didn't even care. He made some questionable parenting choices in Bridgerton in not helping Portia in the slightest with his daughters.

Beyond that, Lord Feathering ton was cold and distant. Plus, he gambled away all the family's money. Fans were shocked by his fate, but this frustrating character mostly does not garner much love.

Anthony Bridgerton

Anthony getting out of the pond on Bridgerton

If there's one character who focuses on himself in season 1, it's Anthony. Early on, he tries to force his sister to marry an old, rude man, and he doesn't care about her happiness or her free will.

Anthony also leads Siena on and rides into a thoughtless duel with the Duke. This character is frustrating mainly because he doesn't get how his actions affect his family. In season 2, viewers see a softer side to Anthony and he redeems himself after more is revealed about his backstory. Still, it doesn't take away from the fact that he can be incredibly frustrating — especially when it comes to his feelings for Kate Sharma.

Nigel Berbrooke

Bridgerton Nigel Berbrooke reading Lady Whistledown

This character, thankfully, only lasts a couple of episodes. Still, he deserves the crown for being the most frustrating. Fans truly feel Daphne's impatience when it comes to dealing with Nigel Berbrooke. He certainly would have made a horrible husband.

Nigel is obsessive, proud, arrogant, and impatient. He doesn't take the hint to leave Daphne alone and feels like he has a right to her company. Plus, fans will never be able to forgive him for trying to take advantage of her. He transcends frustration at that point and becomes downright despicable.
