Actress Nicola Coughlan, who stars as Penelope Featherington - aka Lady Whistledown - on Netflix’s hit period drama Bridgerton, responds to a video of tennis superstar John McEnroe reading Lady Whistledown’s lines. Bridgerton was created by Chris Van Dusen and is produced by Shonda Rhimes. Based on the immensely popular series of romance novels by Julia Quinn, it is set in Regency-era London and follows the aristocratic Bridgerton family as they navigate the complicated world of the British ton. The series premiered on December 25, 2020, and instantly became a massive success for Netflix. The streaming service has so far renewed Bridgerton through season 4.

Bridgerton season 1 introduced viewers to the eponymous family and to their circle of friends and acquaintances, including Coughlan’s Penelope. While the story of the first season focused mainly on the intense and steamy romance between eldest Bridgerton sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and the extremely eligible Simon, Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), the dramas of the Featherington family were also very important to the plot. Meanwhile, nearly every scandal and secret was revealed to the ton by an anonymous newsletter columnist known only as Lady Whistledown. Lady Whistledown’s narration was voiced by the magnificent Julie Andrews, but in the season 1 finale, her true identity was revealed to viewers to be none other than Penelope Featherington.

Now, it seems Coughlan and Andrews may have some competition for the role. Coughlan shared a video from Netflix showing tennis legend John McEnroe offering his take on the Lady Whistledown - or in this case, Lord Whistledown - narration, complete with a hilarious British accent. Coughlan retweeted the video with the comment, Not McEnroe coming for my gig. Check out her post below:

Netflix then replied to Coughlan’s tweet, saying, “but just think of how much intel you could gather with two sets of eyes…” This led readers to speculate that it might be a hint at a possible storyline for season 2 of Bridgerton which could see Penelope sharing her hidden identity with her best friend, fan-favorite Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie). The official Bridgerton account, which regularly tweets from Lady Whistledown’s point of view, also responded to the video of McEnroe, saying, No one should dare to challenge this author's standing. However, I should say Lord Whistledown does have a certain admirable flair.”

McEnroe won’t be putting Coughlan or Andrews out of a job anytime soon, but his narration is extremely entertaining, and many Netflix viewers have already grown quite fond of his voiceover talents as showcased in Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s Never Have I Ever, which was recently renewed for a third season. Perhaps he’ll try his hand at narrating more Netflix properties in the future. It’s also a clever way for Netflix to keep Bridgerton at the top of viewers’ minds in the months until the show returns for season 2, which will focus on the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), and his romance with new character Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). Whether or not Penelope will disclose her secret to Eloise, or to anyone else, remains to be seen. Though fans of the books know some of what lies ahead, Netflix’s Bridgerton has already made several unexpected changes to Quinn’s source material, including divulging Lady Whistedown’s true identity to viewers so early on. All will be revealed in time, but there is still a while to wait - and speculate - before Bridgerton season 2 returns in 2022.
