The first trailer for USA’s new thriller, Briarpatch, presents a surprisingly pulpy murder mystery starring Rosario Dawson. The series is one of several shows coming to USA in the 2019-2020 seson, joining the highly anticipated Bourne Identity spinoff/expansion Treadstone, as well as season 2 of The Purge and The Sinner season 3. Briarpatch, though, comes in part from Sam Esmail, better known as the guy who helped usher the network into a new era of programming with the Emmy-winning Mr. Robot

This time, though, Esmail will co-executive produce alongside writer and showrunner Andy Greenwald, who adapted the series from the Ross Thomas novel of the same name that was first published in 1984. In adapting the novel, Greenwald has made at least one major change to the story of a sibling returning home to uncover the mystery of her sister’s murder. For starters, Thomas’s novel centered on Benjamin Dill, whereas Dawson plays Allegra Dill. Although the character’s gender has been swapped, her circumstances and objective will remain pretty much the same.

As it turns out, that objective becomes about much more than Allegra seeking justice for her late sister; she soon finds herself embroiled in a tale that promises to undo the corruption that's been strangling her hometown for so long. Along the way, Allegra meets her fair share of colorful characters, promising to make Briarpatch one of the pulpiest new dramas on TV when it premieres. Check out the trailer for Briarpatch below:

“‘Briarpatch’ follows Allegra Dill (Rosario Dawson), a dogged investigator returning to her border-town Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees. The season celebrates the beloved genres represented by Thomas’ book -- a stylish blend of crime and pulp fiction -- while updating his sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation.”

The series’ look and tone should be enough to put it on most viewers’ must-watch lists when it premieres early next year. And if this trailer wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, well, the impressive cast that includes Kim Dickens, Jay R. Ferguson, Ed Asner, Alan Cumming, Edi Gathegi, and Brian Geraghty (along with one very docile giraffe) should have audiences ready to take a strange trip into this particular mystery.
