Brian De Palma Directing 'Passion' Remake of French Film 'Love Crime'

Brian De Palma (The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible) is attached to direct 'Passion', a remake of a French psychodrama called 'Crime d'amour'.

Brian De Palma used to make incredibly enjoyable movies, if not always the most original—from Dressed to Kill to The Untouchables to Mission: Impossible. Unfortunately, his most recent films like The Black Dahlia, just do not stack up to his earlier work in my opinion.

Still, there’s always the hope that a once-successful director will find his way back to the top of his game - which is why it’s exciting to learn that De Palma will be directing Passion, a remake of the 2010 French psychodrama Crime d’amour (otherwise known as Love Crime).

The original film's story centers around an executive assistant (Ludivine Sagnier) who grows to hate her senior executive boss (Kristin Scott Thomas) because of how badly she mistreats and uses her. Check out the trailer for the French film below:

Brian De Palma recently spoke to Variety about why the remake interested him so much, saying:

“Not since Dressed to Kill have I had a chance to combine eroticism, suspense, mystery and murder into one spellbinding cinematic experience.”

Comparing Passion to Dressed to Kill is certainly encouraging news, as it’s easily one of his best films. It’s also the sort of movie that De Palma does best.  Still, The Black Dahlia was supposed to be all those things, as well – erotic, suspenseful, mysterious, and packed full of murder – and instead it was just ridiculous and laugh-out-loud hilarious, but unintentionally so. And the acting! Don't even get me started on that.

Is Brian De Palma Still Directing Untouchables Capone Rising

Robert De Niro as Al Capone in The Untouchables

It’s unclear what this means for The Untouchables: Capone Rising, the prequel to The Untouchables that Brian De Palma has been attached to for some time. After it was announced a while back that Nicholas Cage was set to star as Al Capone, there has been almost no mention of the film's existence in the media. It's probably for the best, though, unless David Mamet is returning to write the script.

Passion will take place in London, but principal photography will be filmed in Germany to take advantage of all those delicious German tax rebates. Shooting begins in August.
