The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduced several new creatures to the series, but perhaps one of the most elusive and mysterious of these is the Blupee. Blupees are a blue, eerily glowing species that most resemble rabbits in appearance and behavior. Rather than having long ears like rabbits, though, Blupees have gold antennae on top of their heads. Although few details are revealed about Blupees in the game, the information that is provided could point to their importance in not only BOTW but the Legend of Zelda series as a whole.

Blupees are difficult to encounter in Breath of the Wild. Although they can sometimes be found in various wooded areas throughout Hyrule, they appear somewhat regularly near Cotera’s Great Fairy Fountain just northeast of Kakariko Village. Additionally, they will spawn atop Satori Mountain when the Lord of the Mountain appears. However, even if Link waits for Blupees at these locations, they spawn infrequently and scurry away quickly if they spot him.

Aside from the thrill of finding one of these fascinating creatures, there are monetary rewards for locating Blupees in BOTW. If Link hits a Blupee with an arrow, a remote bomb, or a melee weapon, it will drop several Rupees, the Legend of Zelda series’ in-game currency. However, Breath of the Wild’s Blupees and Rupees may have an even stronger connection to each other that impacts all of Zelda’s lore.

The Connection Between BOTW’s Blupees & Rupees In The Legend Of Zelda

There is one character in Breath of the Wild that is particularly interested in learning more about the skittish Blupees. After Link has completed The Hero’s Sword main quest and The Priceless Maracas side quest in BOTW, he can travel to the Korok Forest to find the Korok named Peeks in or around the Great Deku Tree. Peeks gives Link the Legendary Rabbit Trial side quest by telling him about their desire to see a Blupee, even if only through a picture. If Link takes a picture of a Blupee with the Sheikah Slate’s Camera Rune and returns to show Peeks, he will be rewarded with a Silver Rupee.

If Link speaks with Peeks again after completing the side quest, Peeks will give him clues about Blupees’ larger importance. Peeks speculates that Blupees actually make all of the Rupees in Hyrule, which would make them influential in day-to-day life as the source of Hyrule’s currency. If this theory is true, it is possible that Blupees exist in the Legend of Zelda series outside of BOTW since Rupees exist in those other games as well. Additionally, this detail could possibly affect theories about BOTW’s timeline placement. Rupees have been found in almost every Zelda game to date, including Skyward Sword, the series’ first entry in the timeline. Certainly, Blupees have a special connection to Rupees in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and if Peeks’ theory is accurate, Blupees could play a large role in the lore of the entire series.
