The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild might give off similar creepy vibes to Majora’s Mask, but Bill Trinen has stated that it is its own game separate from Majora’s Mask. Majora’s Mask has always stood out as a Zelda title due to its unique themes and sinister ambiance, which no other Zelda title has replicated thus far.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask may not have been as critically acclaimed as Ocarina of Time, but in some ways it stands out more than its predecessor. Its NPCs have a lot of the same designs as Ocarina of Time, but being able to see everyone’s struggles with the end of the world along with the dark tone the game offered made Majora’s Mask a cult classic among Zelda fans. Both trailers of Breath of the Wild 2 give off similar creepy vibes comparable to Majora’s Mask, and fans are also reminded of the older title thanks to the upcoming game's status as a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild.

In an interview with IGN, Product Marketing Manager Bill Trinen has responded to statements comparing Breath of the Wild 2 to Majora's Mask. Bill stated that it is an “easy comparison” to make given the nature of the game, but he made it clear that Breath of the Wild 2 is “its own game.” He went on to say that “I think as we start to show a bit more of the game over the coming months to the next year or so, it’ll probably start to be a bit more apparent where this game stands on its own and what makes it so unique.”

Breath of the Wild 2

The few shots of gameplay this year’s E3 showed of Breath of the Wild 2 revealed some of the new additions the sequel will have. Some new items and abilities were shown, such as what appeared to be another version of Stasis, which lets Link reverse time, as well as an item that allowed Link to swim through walls. However, the title of the game hasn’t been revealed as of yet due to spoilers. Breath of the Wild 2 has also been compared to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword with its shots of Link paragliding through the sky. Just like Majora’s Mask, it also appears to be using the same aspects as its predecessor.

The exact nature of Breath of the Wild 2 is still unknown, even with the first look at gameplay footage from this year’s E3. However, it does seem to be taking some aspects from past Zelda titles in order to create its own distinct identity, similarly to how the first Breath of the Wild takes the same open world concept as the original Legend of Zelda. It’s possible that the sequel could be acting in the same way, and if that is the case, this could make the sequel to Breath of the Wild even more special than the first one.
