Make no mistake, Heisenberg is coming – he’ll just be stopping off at Comic-Con before paying a visit to the rest of us.
Last week, after AMC announced the SDCC 2012 panel line-up for its hit shows The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, there were naturally some questions as to what each panel might bring along in terms of footage, previews and sneak peeks. Well, with the broadcast premiere of Breaking Bad season 5 happening July 15, AMC has seen fit to screen the season opener, ‘Live Free or Die,’ at Comic-Con the day before.
The Saturday night panel will not only be headed up by series creator Vince Gilligan and the show’s award-winning actors, Bryan Cranston (Walter White) and Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman), but pretty much the rest of the cast will be on hand as well. When AMC announced that Anna Gunn (Skylar White), RJ Mitte (Walt Jr.), Dean Norris (Hank Schrader), Betsy Brandt (Marie Schrader), Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman) and Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) would also be in attendance, perhaps we should have guessed the event would turn into something more than a mere panel.
The announcement from the network coincides nicely with the release of a new, longer trailer for the upcoming fifth season. After dishing out a couple of too-short trailers, several pictures featuring Walt in Heisenberg’s trademark porkpie hat and that impressive “All Hail the King“ poster, the Breaking Bad team finally gave us something a little more concrete. The trailer compiles most of what we’ve already seen, both in season’s past and the recent previews, but they’ve added enough new footage for fans to really start getting excited.
From the look of things, Walt and Jesse are back together, doing what they do best – which, according to Walt, means providing their product to a certain clientele whose needs can no longer be met following Gustavo ‘Gus’ Fring’s (Giancarlo Esposito) rather dramatic exit. It’s clear that with the duo cooking again, Walt doesn’t feel his rise to the top was meant to be something temporary, nor did he take it as a sign that he should get out while the getting is still good.
Additionally, even though some photos may have spoiled it, the versatile killing machine, known as Mike Ehrmantraut, seems to have made it back from the grievous injuries he suffered at the hand of the Mexican cartel, to offer Walt a word of warning. Last season, Mike and Walt certainly failed to see eye-to-eye on the topic of Gus Fring, so now with his employer gone, it’s anyone’s guess as to where Mike’s allegiance will lie.
Last season’s premiere started off with Walt and Jesse in a slightly different, and rather precarious position. As the cast and creator have managed to remain mum in terms of where the season is headed – or even how it will start out – it sounds as though those who will be able to make the special screening will be in for a real treat – and nearly 24 hours worth of bragging rights.
Breaking Bad will have its Comic-Con panel in Ballroom 20 on Saturday, July 14 @6:45pm. Meanwhile, those at home can tune in to the season 5 premiere @10pm on Sunday, July 15 on AMC.
