'Breaking Bad' Season 5 Premiere Clip: What Happened?

In a new clip from 'Breaking Bad' season 5, Walt discusses the demise of Gus Fring with Walt Jr., while trying to uncover just how much his brother-in-law Hank knows.

For some television programs, figuring out the timeline between seasons can sometimes be tricky. Many shows use the gap from one season's end to the next as a means to jump forward in time, and better facilitate the telling of the new season's storyline. It's been used time and again - recently in Dexter and will again be seen in the upcoming third season of HBO's Boardwalk Empire. However, with Breaking Bad, creator Vince Gilligan has played the series' timeline without jumping around too much, and from what is shown in the above clip, season 5 definitely kicks off very soon after the events that brought season 4 to a close.

Yet again, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is forced to feign ignorance in order to distance Walt Jr. (RJ Mitte) from the alter-ego that has not only skyrocketed him to the top of the New Mexico meth dealers association, but may also make Heisenberg a target for reprisal in regards to Gus' masterful decimation of the very Mexican cartel to which he answered. Then again, as evidenced by the brief glimpse of in this clip, Walt's biggest concern may be his semi-estranged wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn).

None too pleased with finding out her formerly cancer-ridden husband had turned to cooking meth as a means by which to set up a nest egg before passing, Skyler has understandably failed to connect with Walt's burgeoning awesomeness in the same manner as the audience. Because of this, Skyler has become one of many facets that could speculatively lead to Walt's ultimate undoing – provided that is the direction Vince Gilligan has decided he will take Breaking Bad during its final run.

Most importantly, though, this clip serves as something of a primer for the season premiere on July 15 (unless you're attending Comic-Con 2012, in which case you'll likely be camping out to get into the advanced screening). For those caught up on their Breaking Bad, it thankfully offers nothing in the way of spoilers for season 5, but it does a great job of setting up time and place – which is apparently just hours after Hector "Tio" Salamanca dinged his last "DING."

Still, given Walt's motivations, it's certainly not his life that concerns him the most, but the legacy he leaves behind – both as Walter White and his alter-ego, Heisenberg. One of the few men capable of bringing down both the mild-mannered former high school chemistry teacher and the increasingly ruthless drug kingpin is Walt's brother-in-law, Hank (Dean Norris). By the way he responds to Walt Jr.'s enthusiasm for his uncle's profession and tenacity, it suggests Walt Sr. feels both a sense of trepidation and envy when the subject of Hank comes up.

Either way, fans won't have to wait long to find out where Walter is headed; the first half of Breaking Bad's final season is almost upon us.

Breaking Bad season 5 premieres Sunday, July 15 @10pm. Screen Rant will also have complete coverage of the Breaking Bad panel and screening at Comic-Con 2012.
