'Brave New World' Next For Ridley Scott?

It was recently announced (to much fan excitement) that Ridley Scott will be directing the upcoming Alien prequel, instead of the previously reported Scott protege, Carl Rinsch. However, that doesn't necessarily mean we'll be seeing that Alien prequel anytime soon.

Today THR's Risky Biz Blog is reporting that Universal has set up an adaptation of Aldous Huxley's classic 1931 science fiction novel, Brave New World, for Scott to produce (through Scott Free) and possibly direct. Leonardo DiCaprio is apparently also going to produce (through his Appian Way) and is suppossed eyeing a starring role in the film as well.

Could we see Brave New World before we see Scott's Alien prequel? The project has been gestating for a while now, and already has Apocalypto co-writer Farhad Safinia on-board to pen the script. He is expected to start working on it shortly.

Brave New World is a highly respected sci-fi novel that depicts:

...a seemingly perfect 26th century world that has achieved harmony by tightly controlling birth, which takes place mainly in laboratories, and outlawing family. The world is populated by a series of five castes, each with its own defined roles.

Characters who figure in to the story are Bernard, [a slightly deformed member of the high-caste], and Lenina, the woman with whom he is infatuated.

Although Risky Biz Blog points out that the project is, "gaining momentum," and that Scott Free and Appian's execs have been meeting frequently over the past few months regarding the project, they also point out that several people familiar with it say that it's still very much in the development stages.

Ridley Scott is also currently working on the upcoming Robin Hood, has a Monopoly movie in the works, plus a host of other producing duties. Going by DiCaprio's IMDB resume, beyond Christopher Nolan's Inception, he has three upcoming movies upcoming in the works himself: The Low Dweller, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and The Chancellor's Manuscript.

Brave New World has already had numerous TV (film), radio and stage adaptations. But I think if anyone should have another pop at adapting Huxley's ambitious (and chillingly prophetic) novel it should be Ridley Scott. Let's not forget he took Philip K. Dick's equally ambitious Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and turned it into the now classic Blade Runner. And DiCaprio is a great leading man, IMO - I'd like to see him team up again with Scott after they did such a great job with Body of Lies last year.

Screen Rant will keep you posted as this one develops. What do you think of this news?

Brave New World is currently in the development stages and sits currently without a planned release date.
