Amazon's new superhero satire series The Boys is one of the platform's most-watched shows of the year. The rise of popularity in superhero content in the last few years is now translating to successes in the streaming wars. Based on the acclaimed comic series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, a TV adaptation of The Boys received plenty of attention upon the announcement in 2017 that Amazon would be its home.

With a cast headlined by Karl Urban as Billy Butcher and Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell, The Boys follows Billy and Hughie's attempt to take down The Seven, a famous superhero team, and Vought, the corporation that backs them. The series launched on Amazon Prime a few weeks ago amid strong reviews, and the show's quality, adult content, and cliffhanger ending has seen it become a big topic of conversation online. This is good news for Amazon as The Boys was previously renewed for season two, and they've confirmed that the buzz surrounding the show to this point is legit.

Amazon Prime Video announced today that The Boys has become one of their most binged series of 2019 in just two weeks. More impressively, though, the streaming service also has revealed that The Boys is among their most-watched series ever. Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, said the following about The Boys' performance to this point: "This creates great momentum and excitement for us as we get ready for season two." Executive produced by Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg, The Boys is already in production on season two, and Kripke shared his enthusiasm for the response and hopes to make season two even better. He said:

"I’m so beyond thrilled with the response to Season 1. And mainly, it’s made me get my ass in gear and work even harder on Season 2. I don’t want Season 2 to go bigger, I want it to go deeper. A more intense, more insane, more wrenching, more character-driven season. It’s my one and only goal to make Season 2 even better than Season 1."

While Amazon didn't share exact viewing numbers or any other shows that The Boys had a similar launch to, having it already be in the discussion for Amazon's most-watched original series is impressive. If this is the case after just two weeks of being available, The Boys should continue to climb the internal charts for Amazon. This is all the more likely thanks to the generally great word of mouth that the series has received to this point.

What makes this even better for Amazon, though, is what it means for the future of The Boys. They already had confidence in the series with the early renewal, but that didn't guarantee that the series would catch on as it has. Now that The Boys is one of their biggest series ever, the anticipation for season two should be even higher. They've yet to announce when the next season will debut, but it won't be too long now that production is underway. After finding success at the end of the summer, the series very well could return in a similar window in 2020.
