Showrunner Eric Kripke confirms The Boys season 3 is currently being written. Fans of The Boys are just one day away from seeing how the second season of Amazon Prime Video's hit series concludes. Following the acclaim of the first season, The Boys has continued to deliver a high-quality show with complex characters, surprising twists, and examination of the superhero genre and major world issues.

Even before a single episode of The Boys season 2 dropped, Amazon reassured the growing fan base that the show will continue. They gave the series an early season 3 renewal, which was announced during Comic-Con@Home. It was also recently confirmed that The Boys is getting a spinoff series focused on college-age Supes. With more content in this universe on the way, fans are itching to know when some of the content will arrive. There's no release date set for either project, but we now have an update on the status of The Boys season 3.

As part of New York Comic Con's virtual convention, Amazon assembled the cast and crew of The Boys for a panel. During the conversation, Kripke shared the current status of season 3. It was previously revealed that production was hoping to begin in early 2021, and Kripke says that right now their focus is on finishing the scripts so they're ready to film whenever conditions improve.

We’re in the writer’s room, cooking through season 3. So we’ll get that to you as soon as we can - COVID willing.

Kripke and his fellow writers might still be working on The Boys' scripts, but they already have a general idea of what the story will contain. It was previously announced that Supernatural star Jensen Ackles will play Soldier Boy in season 3. Soldier Boy is the original Supe created by Compound V in the comics created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. He is so far the only new character confirmed to appear in season 3, but it is expected that the main cast members will all return - as long as they survive The Boys season 2 finale.

Once viewers have had a chance to see how The Boys season 2 ends, it should be easier to figure out where season 3 could go. There will surely be some elements borrowed from the comics, but Kripke has made plenty of changes based on what was established in the source material already. Whatever Kripke decides to include in season 3, the biggest concern now is when The Boys will return. Depending on when production is allowed to start, it might not be until 2022 before the adventures of The Boys and The Seven continue.
