The Boys season 3 is so intense that the makeup department ran out of fake blood after filming just three episodes. Amazon Prime's hit series is set to return for its highly anticipated next installment next month, with the most recent The Boys season 3 trailer showcasing what looks to be the show's most wild season yet. Based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys puts a darker spin on the superhero genre by offering a glimpse into a world where superheroes are the face of a corrupted conglomerate named Vought Industries.

Beloved for its gory and brutal approach to common superhero tropes, The Boys sees Karl Urban as Billy Butcher as he attempts to take down Vought's 'supes' once and for all. Alongside Urban, The Boys season 3 will also see the return of the majority of season 2's principal cast, including Antony Starr, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Chace Crawford, and Jessie T Usher. Season 3 will also introduce audiences to Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles, with the character having previously been described as a parody of Captain America. While many of The Boys season 3's secrets have been kept tightly under wraps throughout its promotional run, the cast have offered a number of exciting teases of what's to come, including an adaptation of the infamous Herograsm comic book storyline.

During a recent interview with UK radio station RadioX, Urban discussed The Boys season 3 and shared a surprising piece of trivia that hints at the level of gore audiences should expect. The star teased that "everything was upscaled" with season 3, before revealing that the show's makeup department ran out of fake blood fairly early on during filming, stating that by episode 3 they had already made their way through the series' entire supply. Check out Urban's full quote below.

"Everything was upscaled. You know, the makeup department ran out of fake blood by episode 3. Episode 3 of 8, and we were out of blood."

There are many elements at play in The Boys season 3 that could be the cause of all this blood and gore. Previous teases for the seasons have referenced the idea of levelling the playing field, with the official trailer offering glimpses of a suped-up Butcher after he is given a serum similar to that of Compound V, granting him superpowers for 24 hours. Urban recently shared that these new abilities mean that Butcher is faced with a decision to become a superhero or a super-villain, and that this will ultimately be explored throughout season 3. Perhaps Butcher's evolution and powers will serve as a reason for all this bloodshed, though previous clips have also indicated there may be a few more humorous, bloody moments in The Boys season 3, too.

While The Boys and fake blood certainly go hand-in-hand, this fun tease from Urban seemingly confirms that season 3 is about to venture into new and more gruesome territory. With the first three episodes featuring that much blood, it's fair to assume the show will hit the ground running and waste no time in warming up to its most brutal and full-on moments. With just a few weeks to go now until The Boys finally returns, season 3 looks set to remind audiences that the series is absolutely not for the faint-hearted.
