Warning: SPOILERS for The Boys season 3

The sometimes-controversial animal rights organization, PETA, honors The Boys season 3’s disturbing octopus scene. Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic of the same name, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys was created by Eric Kripke alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. As a satirical take on the superhero genre, the series follows a vigilante group of non-powered people as they attempt to take down/expose corrupt “Supes” and the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate that enables them.

Among The Boys’ Supe roster is DC's Aquaman parody Deep, a.k.a. Kevin Moskowitz (Chace Crawford). In addition to being able to breathe underwater and communicate with marine life, Deep is a sexual deviant; he forced himself on Starlight in season 1, which ultimately got him kicked out of The Boys' equivalent of the Justice League, the Seven. In season 3 episode 3, “Barbary Coast,” Deep returns to the Seven, albeit at a cost. Following an earlier scene in which he gets off to an octopus in his fish tank, Homelander decides to serve him said octopus, Timothy. To prove his loyalty to the Seven, Deep is forced to eat his close friend as the live octopus begs for its life.

Thankfully, no actual animals were harmed during the filming, as the octopus was created using cutting-edge technology - something PETA very much appreciates. The organization is honoring Crawford, Kripke, and The Boys special effects team with its “Tech, Not Terror” Award for that cruelty-free and, frankly, disturbing scene featuring Deep and a computer-generated octopus. In an official statement, PETA’s Senior Vice President Lisa Lange says, “The Boys’ real heroes are working behind the scenes, creating a realistic CGI octopus so that animals can live in peace. PETA is celebrating this series for helping viewers see every octopus as an individual like Timothy, not as an entrée or as entertainment.”

The Boys Season 3 Gets Award From PETA For Disturbing Octopus Scene

The Boys season 3's octopus scene is perhaps a perfect example of the series’ masterful blend of comedy and real-world commentary. In another interview, The Boys’ cast offered up an impromptu memorial for Timothy, while showrunner Kripke explained the octopus “didn’t deserve the cruel fate of being eaten raw,” which is a fate shared by billions of invertebrates. Suffice to say, Timothy’s death in The Boys is enough to make even the most devoted carnivores wince.

Just a few episodes into The Boys season 3, it’s become clear the series is upping the ante in almost every perceivable way. Before the premiere, Kripke said season 3’s opening scene was jaw-droppingly insane, and episode 1’s “Thanus” meme-inspired sequence delivered on that promise. Crawford teased The Boys season 3 was so wild that he's worried about future roles. The award from PETA will likely calm his concerns, if only for a moment. Until Deep inevitably gets kicked out again, fans can watch him appease Homelander when new episodes of The Boys drop Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
