The trailer for The Boys season 3 indicates that Amazon's iteration of Black Noir and Homelander is receiving a shocking twist similar to that of the comics. The show is known for paying tribute to Garth Ennis' original vision while modernizing The Boys' parody of DC and Marvel comic book characters to comment on current cultural events. However, The Boys' season 3 trailer depicts several revelations that change the course of the show. Although some of the most notable developments in the trailer include Billy Butcher using laser vision and Soldier Boy coming out of stasis, there is another moment that readers of The Boys comics recognize as extremely significant.

At first, Black Noir may not seem notable because, in the first two seasons of The Boys, he is a henchman carrying out tasks for the Vought corporation rather than a character with wants and desires. While Black Noir's powers are astronomically strong, his intelligence, identity, and personality are left ambiguous. Meanwhile, in the comics, Black Noir is the main antagonist of the entire series. Vought engineers a clone of Homelander (Black Noir) as a means to kill him if he ever steps out of line. Black Noir goes mad while waiting to fulfill his purpose and pushes Homelander to his breaking point by framing him for various crimes.

The editing of Imagine Dragons' music and images within The Boys season 3 trailer indicate Black Noir is becoming a primary antagonist with his agenda as a primary twist in the upcoming season. The trailer, alongside Black Noir’s comic book history, suggests the show is upgrading him from a minor villain to a legitimate antagonist. Throughout seasons 1 and 2 of The Boys, as well as the events in The Boys Presents: Diabolical, and within various online promos for The Boys, Black Noir is mostly a background character. However, the season 3 trailer promises so much more for Black Noir.

The trailer intentionally edits certain images to certain lyrics to imply Black Noir is an antagonist towards Homelander in season 3. Firstly, Black Noir appears immediately after Homelander is shown absentmindedly staring into a mirror. Throughout the show, Homelander's state of mind steadily becomes more dangerous and more fragile. So when Black Noir appears in the next shot of the trailer and Imagine Dragons' lyric “Wait until the reaper takes my life” from the song "Bones" plays, Black Noir may have to act as a literal reaper and kill the unhinged Homelander like his comic-book counterpart.

Throughout the trailer, Imagine Dragons repeats the lyric “there goes my mind” as images of Homelander flash by. This references The Boys' season 2 finale where Homelander loses everything he loves, so now he is likely to do something drastically terrible. Furthermore, in The Boys Presents: Diabolical season 1, episode 8, "One Plus One Equals Two," Madeline Stillwell tells Homelander, “Noir is not there to teach you; he’s there to watch you.” These events indicate this version of Black Noir has the same purpose as his comic book counterpart: to kill Homelander if he becomes a liability.

The Boys television adaptation is not afraid to stray from its comic origins to be more relevant to audiences. The show consistently changes the arcs of characters like The Deep and A-Train from their comic counterpart; Black Noir's origins may change as well. However, it is unlikely that everything about Black Noir’s original backstory involving Homelander will be thrown out the window. Especially when considering all the foreshadowing present in the series and additional promotional material. Regardless, the trailer demonstrates that season 3 of The Boys features many twists for Homelander and Black Noir.
