The trailer for The Boys season 2 includes a key reveal about Starlight's current status within The Seven. One of the biggest storylines in The Boys' debut season on Amazon Prime was the recruitment of Annie January, better known as Starlight, into the world-famous Vought superhero group, The Seven. Complicating matters considerably is Annie's relationship with Hughie Campbell, who also recently got a new job. Hughie has (reluctantly) joined The Boys, whose ultimate goal is to take down The Seven entirely. Although Annie's loyalties are divided in The Boys season 1, she eventually sides with Hughie in the finale.

In "You Got Me," M.M., Frenchie and Kimiko are captured, and with Butcher off seeking revenge against Homelander, it's up to Hughie to spring The Boys free. The newbie succeeds (with a little help from his retainer) but the foursome are soon pinned down by a team of highly-trained and heavily-armed blacks ops goons. Fortunately, Starlight arrives to save the day, betraying her own employers to save her boyfriend. With Annie's help, The Boys are almost home free until A-Train arrives. The speedster realizes Annie is a "f**king rat" and the two members of The Seven do battle until A-Train succumbs to a drug-related cardiac arrest. Annie's final scene in The Boys season 1 sees her applying CPR to a dying A-Train as Hughie makes his escape.

This cliffhanger left a major question mark over Annie's future heading into The Boys season 2. A-Train knows Starlight betrayed The Seven; if he recovered, surely her superhero days would be numbered, and that's assuming Homelander didn't simply vaporize her on the spot. Annie's future as part of The Seven has been answered thanks to the latest trailer for The Boys' second season. The footage shows Annie going about her usual duties alongside the likes of Queen Maeve and Homelander as if nothing ever happened. The most telling shot, however, is the gathering in Seven HQ, which clearly shows both Starlight and A-Train present. Since season 2 newcomer Stormfront is also visible here, this scene has to take place in the present day. Clearly, Annie has found a way to remain a member of The Seven despite aiding The Boys (all of whom are now all officially registered as dangerous wanted criminals) with their jailbreak.

The key to Annie's continued employment is obviously A-Train. The season 2 trailer confirms A-Train survives his heart attack and remains part of The Seven, so why hasn't he outed Annie as a traitor? Although heart attacks aren't known to cause amnesia, it's possible A-Train hit his head during the incident and completely forgot Annie was involved in the prisoners' escape. This would create tension as the super-fast hero gradually regains his memory throughout the season, but would also risk feeling like a very convenient and contrived plot twist.

Another potential explanation is that A-Train uses his knowledge of Annie's betrayal to blackmail her in The Boys season 2. When viewers last saw him, A-Train was desperately addicted to Compound V and desperately clinging to former glories. A-Train now has major dirt on Annie, could be using this to his advantage by forcing Annie to score his drugs.

Perhaps the most likely reason Starlight hasn't yet been forcefully booted out of The Seven is that A-Train simply chooses not to reveal her betrayal. Despite being at each other's throats when the heart attack occurred, Annie and Hughie's quick thinking likely saved A-Train's life. Maybe he feels the need to repay that debt by keeping quiet about Annie's role in The Boys' breakout. Also worth acknowledging is the ax A-Train has to grind with Homelander. The leader of The Seven was using A-Train to spread Compound V around the globe, and this illicit mission ultimately took away everything A-Train loved. Annie has her own problems with The Seven's leadership, so could this unlikely pairing be plotting from within in The Boys season 2?
