The Boys star Karen Fukuhara wants Kimiko and Frenchie (Tomer Capon) to stay together forever. The Boys roared onto the small screen last year when it premiered on Amazon Prime and became one of the streamer's biggest shows. Based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys takes place within a world where superheroes are treated like celebrities, but the power and fame has led to their corruption. A group of vigilantes, led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), seek to take down the Seven, the most prominent superheroes of all.
The Boys is easily one of the goriest shows on television, and it proved that within minutes of its first episode. However, The Boys also contains some sweeter elements, like the surprising relationship between Kimiko and Frenchie. Their story began when Frenchie freed her from captivity, and while they were unable to communicate verbally with each other, they developed a touching bond. The end of season 1 of The Boys saw Frenchie rescuing Kimiko from yet another drastic situation, and season 2 will continue to advance their relationship even further.
Amazon premiered the first three episodes of The Boys season 2 this past Friday, and they've already featured some shocking reveals and developments. Fukuhara recently sat down with TVLine to discuss the devastating changes in Kimiko's life, and conversation inevitably turned to her bond with Frenchie, who openly called Kimiko "my heart" in French. While Fukuhara acknowledged that things between the two characters are still "open-ended right now," she said she loves that and wants the characters to remain close:
It could be love, romantic love. It could be like paternal love, because in the comics, she is portrayed as a younger girl, I think, when you first see her. Or it could be something deeper than friendship, something that we call “twin flame,” something that ties two people together kind of like a magnet, soulmates, if you will. I like to keep it open-ended. It’s exciting to read each script because even Tomer [Capon] and I don’t really know for sure. It’s not that black-and-white just yet. But there’s definitely a chemistry there and a connection between the two characters. I definitely want them to stay together forever, but I don’t know what the relationship is defined as.
In the comics, as Fukuhara noted in the interview, Kimiko and Frenchie's relationship remained ambiguous, and that could be how The Boys chooses to keep them as well. It's worked out so far, as many have praised the sweet dynamic the two characters share. It's a nice reprieve from some of the more gruesome elements of the series. Of course, things aren't likely to stay easy for Frenchie and Kimiko, as season 2 of The Boys has already laid the foundation for a conflict between the two.
Complicating matters is just how much Kimiko and Frenchie have on their plates. With the arrival of a mysterious new supe, Stormfront (Aya Cash), as well as the ramifications of Butcher's season 1 revelation, the Boys have gotten to a rough start in season 2. With Amazon's new release format, episodes of The Boys are rolling out weekly, so fans will have to be patient as they wait for each new development. Hopefully, though, this fan favorite pairing can make it out of season 2 (relatively) unscathed.
