On the 20th anniversary of the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Boys pokes fun at Karl Urban’s role in the blockbuster fantasy film. Originally released on December 18, 2002, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was the second film in Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy trilogy. The film would also serve as Urban’s first major breakout film role, where he played Éomer, the exiled nephew of the King of Rohan, Théoden (played by Bernard Hill). Urban would also return to the role in the trilogy’s final installment, 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. After an impressive career, no doubt helped along greatly by his Lord of the Rings role, Urban currently stars in the hit Prime Video television series The Boys as Billy Butcher. Well known for its biting sense of humor, The Boys would not let the anniversary of The Two Towers pass by without having something to say about Urban’s role in the film. On The Boys' official Twitter account, the show poked fun at Urban’s role as Éomer by posting a side-by-side comparison of him playing both characters, and dubbing his Lord of the Rings character as “Karl Rural”. Butcher Is The Latest Of Urban’s Iconic Roles

While fans of The Boys could not possibly imagine anyone else playing the foul-mouthed leader of the show’s CIA-sponsored vigilantes, Urban’s turn as Billy Butcher is just the latest in a long string of iconic roles for the New Zealand actor. Even prior to his casting in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Urban landed multiple roles on the much-beloved '90s fantasy series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spinoff Xena: Warrior Princess. It would be his casting as Éomer, however, that would ultimately thrust him into international acclaim.

Following his turn in The Lord of the Rings films, Urban quickly managed to secure several pivotal roles in a string of established franchises, including Vin Diesel’s Riddick films and the Jason Bourne series. In 2009, he was also cast in the iconic role of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, tackling the role originally made famous by DeForest Kelley in the original series. Three years later he would also follow Sylvester Stallone in taking on the role of the futuristic comic book hero Judge Dredd in 2012’s cult favorite Dredd.

Boasting a truly impressive resume that would be the envy of any working actor, Urban has proven himself time and again as a talented performer with a penchant for crafting memorable characters. It is a skill that has not only earned him a legion of fans for his time on The Boys, but also provided him with an opportunity to make appearances in mega-franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it is not entirely clear how much longer fans can expect Urban to continue in his latest role as Butcher, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has previously suggested that he has plans for a total of five seasons. With season 4 currently on the way, that might mean it will not be too much longer before the show wraps up. When the time finally does come for Urban to move on from The Boys, no doubt Billy Butcher will continue to be remembered as one of his best roles to date.
