The Boys Season 4 Renewed One Week After Season 3 Premiere

After missing out on a chance for a reunion with the actor, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke teases plans for a Jeffrey Dean Morgan cameo in season 4. Before bringing Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's graphic novels to life, Kripke rose to stardom as the creator of The CW's Supernatural, in which Morgan starred as Winchester family patriarch John, whose disappearance acts as the catalyst for the long-running series. John would ultimately make a deal with the demon Azazel to save Dean's life after the season 1 finale car crash, remaining in Hell for over a century, but would make additional appearances in future seasons.

Kripke would step down from Supernatural following season 5 and go on to create the post-apocalyptic sci-fi series Revolution and time-traveling series Timeless, both of which ran for two seasons at NBC before being cancelled by the network, though the latter would get a two-part series finale. Kripke would then go on to work with producing duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to adapt The Boys for Prime Video, which centers on a group of vigilantes working to expose the superheroes known as The Seven as the corrupt beings they really are. The Boys has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, namely for the performances from its all-star cast, and the creatives behind the show are holding out hope for one key addition in the future.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the show's return, Eric Kripke opened up about failing to land Jeffrey Dean Morgan for a role in The Boys season 3 due to his schedule with The Walking Dead. Despite this, Kripke remains hopeful for the actor to appear in season 4 and teased plans for a cameo for Morgan. See what Kripke shared below:

"Sad for me, happy for him: He's currently the lead, along with Lauren Cohan, on the Walking Dead spin-off. So, schedule-wise, I don't know. We might still remain star-crossed, unfortunately, because I did ask. We had a role come up, and my first question was, 'Well, is Jeffrey available?'"

Despite the season 3 cameo not coming to be and leading The Walking Dead spinoff series, Jeffrey Dean Morgan himself has remained optimistic about appearing in The Boys season 4, saying he would make it work. Given Prime Video has yet to officially renew The Boys for season 4, it's understandable Kripke is keeping the plans for Morgan's cameo under wraps in case he's able to make it happen. However, with Prime Video currently working on a college-set spinoff in the world of the show and recently releasing the animated spinoff The Boys Presents: Diabolical, it seems unlikely the streaming platform is parting with the franchise any time soon.

Should Morgan make his way to the series, he would be the latest major Supernatural alum to reunite with Kripke for The Boys. Jensen Ackles is making his debut in the series with season 3 as Soldier Boy, the world's first Supe who is described as being worse than Homelander, while season 1 included Jim Beaver portraying Secretary of Defense Robert Singer, a nod to his Supernatural character Bobby Singer. With Ackles teasing that Soldier Boy could carry over into The Boys season 4, Kripke might not be the only Supernatural vet to get a proper reunion in the superhero series.
