Being a mix between a dating simulator and a dungeon delver, Boyfriend Dungeon takes on many RPG tropes, including item crafting. In a world where people can transform into swords, rapiers, and other forms of weaponry; the game explores the concepts of healthy vs unhealthy relationships, as they fight against an antagonist who has a history of stalking and emotional manipulation. Boyfriend Dungeon has many interesting mechanics in play, including weapon synergy through dating.

Boyfriend Dungeon mostly consists of gift-giving, flirting, and the occasional bit of monster-fighting, in the name of pursuing love and deepening relationships. These dungeon areas often take the form of malls or bar areas, and the enemies inside them can involve wacky enemies, like record players and martinis. A gimmick to be sure, but it is a fun one. As with several games, crafting is a mechanic where players can create their own gear and consumables.

The crafting itself is done within the player’s home apartment. Inside the apartment is a crafting table where players can craft anything provided that they have the proper recipe and materials. These recipes can craft outfits, hats, gifts, and zines. Zines function similarly to magic scrolls, in that they can conjure items or inflict a certain effect. These zines can conjure fireballs, put monsters to sleep, or generate mine traps, and they are all incredibly useful inside dungeons.

Items in Boyfriend Dungeon can be generated by collecting specific materials and recipes. Both of which can be found by exploring dungeons. Every monster and breakable object can drop crafting material, and the dungeons themselves have hidden nooks and crannies where vaults can be found. These vaults often contain crafting recipes and are generally guarded by either a horde of enemies or a boss. So players are advised to take their time exploring and search for secret rooms, long corridors, and the corners of large rooms.

Grinding monster drops for the proper crafting material can be risky and time-consuming. In which case, players should try visiting shops like El Granero and Championne Athleisure that sell certain crafting materials in their inventory. The Monster Shop is also an option, as they usually sell rarer materials, and they can be accessed in dungeons by paying for access at vending machines and entering the hidden area.
