We still don't have an official title or an exact plotline for the upcoming Jason Bourne film (tentatively known as Bourne 5), but we do have new photos from the set. The latest installment of the successful franchise, which marks the return of star Matt Damon, is currently filming in London, England.
Bourne 5 is slated for a summer 2016 release, and reunites Damon with director Paul Greengrass from The Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum. The duo have teamed up to pen the script along with Christopher Rouse, who worked as editor on previous Bourne films. This will be the first movie in the franchise that Tony Gilroy hasn't had a hand in writing - including Jeremy Renner's contribution to the series, The Bourne Legacy.
The new Bourne 5 set photos, courtesy of Coming Soon, show Damon's character Jason Bourne in a violently confrontational scene. With his gun raised threateningly, we'd guess he's looking for some information from the suited man he's got cornered on a rooftop.
Renner's Aaron Cross won't be involved in the newest Bourne movie, though a crossover featuring both the Cross and Bourne characters still remains a future possibility. Bourne 5 will instead focus on what Bourne's been up to in the 12 years since he's been operating on his own, and how the conversations about spying and civil liberties have changed in this "post-Snowden world." As Damon previously put it:
"... It seems like enough has changed [since 'The Bourne Ultimatum'], you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
Julia Stiles is returning as Nicky Parsons in Bourne 5, and we may learn more about their past together that was alluded to in The Bourne Ultimatum. Newcomers to the series include Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), and Scott Shepherd. It wouldn't be a Bourne movie without a highly-trained assassin coming after our protagonist, and Vincent Cassell (Black Swan, Eastern Promises) should play that role well.
For a man that was worried how he'd feel at 37 after a strenuous day on the set playing Jason Bourne, the latest photos from the Bourne 5 movie set show Damon looks as ready as ever for the action role at age 45.
Bourne 5 is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29th, 2016.
