Although people have been excited for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, it seems this isn’t even the official name for the highly anticipated sequel. Breath of the Wild 2 was originally announced at Nintendo’s E3 2019 presentation, and fans of the first game have been craving more information ever since.

Their wish came true during the final seconds of the Nintendo Direct near the end of E3, during which a new teaser trailer was shown that included looks at some of Breath of the Wild 2’s new mechanics and an updated release date. As is the case with many AAA teasers, there are plenty of small details thrown into the trailer that will be analyzed again and again to uncover new information about Breath of the Wild 2. Despite little footage or knowledge of the game, it’s already expected to be one of the best games ever released. Breath of the Wild hit that mark in the eyes of critics and players alike, and the sequel is supposedly more content meant for the original that needed its own game due to technical and volumetric limitations. Naturally, the game is highly sought after simply for being more of what gamers have come to love.

However, it’s unclear exactly how the world is even supposed to address this sequel. While it’s known colloquially as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, it’s never actually been marketed as such. In fact, it’s possible “Breath of the Wild” may not be in the title at all. This leads some to think the game could actually be a sequel to another Legend of Zelda game and only a Breath of the Wild sequel in spirit. According to a report by IGN on Tuesday, the game does have an official name, but Nintendo has decided to keep it a secret. A Tweet from IGN states that Breath of the Wild 2’s actual name “could clue players into what happens in the game.

Nonetheless, with Breath of the Wild 2 arriving in the near future, the stage has been set for the gaming industry going into the second half of 2021. Despite changes in the world, there’s plenty to look forward to this year and next. Breath of the Wild 2’s E3 appearance was the tip of the iceberg. For a long time, E3 has served as the perfect way for video game companies around the world to show western audiences what they have in store, and this year was no different.

As upcoming games are announced and given new trailers, headlines surge with new information from various places across the industry. Breath of the Wild 2’s interesting naming situation is a great example of this. It’s quickly led fans to wonder what the official name of the sequel could be and what the details of the story are, especially considering the nature of its secrecy. While it’s smart to keep a game’s plot from being leaked or deciphered prior to launch, it’s hard to see how Nintendo announcing the name later will stop potential spoilers, unless they spoil it in another announcement beforehand. Truth be told, though, it matters very little what the actual Breath of the Wild 2 title is. The game will be one of the most anticipated titles of the year regardless.
