A Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild modder has showcased just how sunburnt Link can get, amping up the game's typical sunburn with what look like very painful results for the Hero of Time. Thanks to BOTW's map variations, Link is often subjected to extreme temperatures, but the creator's exposé takes the Nintendo feature to new heights.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game that continues to surprise and delight its players, despite launching back in 2017. As well as having an expansive map filled with Easter eggs, hidden quests, and secret dialogue, Breath of the Wild modders and content creators have also uncovered scrapped mechanics and tweakable features that reveal new insights into the open-world adventure. Previously unseen gameplay elements, revealed by exploring the behind-the-scenes of the game's code through exposés, even include a recently-discovered BOTW poison water mechanic.

Modder and Redditor PostposterousYT, known as Postposterous on YouTube, has pushed BOTW's sunburn mechanics to their limits, giving Link a painful sunburn while testing how deep the gameplay feature goes. The creator notes that "the sunburn mechanic is [sic] Breath of the Wild only reveals a portion of what is actually possible," only allowing Link a sunburn of around 4%. Across YouTube and Reddit, the creator has tested the feature, giving Link a 10% burn on Reddit, and even showing a 100% burn on YouTube. While Link's 10% sunburn already looks like it requires medical attention, the 100% burn makes Link almost unrecognizable, garnering a lot of attention across both platforms.

While typical BOTW players won't see Link's more extreme sunburns when exploring the hit game, many commenters noted that they didn't know Link could get sunburned at all. Those who haven't yet noticed the feature can do so when Link is in very hot areas like the Gerudo Desert. Keeping a close eye on the character model will reveal tanned or burned patches on his body when exposed to the scorching sun, something that's often easy to miss. Zelda: Breath of the Wild's attention to detail still impresses players to this day, and the Reddit post has enlightened many who missed the slight sunburn feature during their time with the game. It's hoped that the game's sequel, currently referred to as BOTW 2, will contain a similar level of attention to detail. The release will be a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, and while too much about the game's map isn't yet known, more details are expected soon with Breath of the Wild 2 targeting a 2022 launch.
