A player of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has shared footage of their game of "Red Light, Green Light" with a Guardian, similar to that of the Netflix show Squid Game. The popular children's game has been a favorite playground pastime for generations, but has recently seen a spike in interest due to its inclusion in the Korean drama. "Red Light Green Light" and other activities seen from the series have been recreated in a number of video games since the show released earlier this year, with Squid Game recreations in Animal Crossing, Core, and more.

Netflix's Squid Game has been one of the most popular new series of the year, and its success has seen viral memes, recreations, and even Halloween costumes shared across the internet. The show has been particularly popular with video game fans, in part thanks to its battle royale-like premise that pits players against each other across a series of children's games, risking their lives for a cash prize. Despite not sharing very many themes with the show, the popularity of the Legend of Zelda games has made them a prime candidate for fan-made crossover content with Squid Game, with one fan previously creating Zelda art inspired by Squid Game.

Redditor and Zelda fan eatshrimps shared their "Red Light, Green Light" game to the BOTW subreddit, showcasing their fight for their life against a Guardian. In Squid Game, contestants are forced to run across a pitch while music plays, but must stop quickly and remain still once the music stops to avoid being eliminated by a robot doll. In eatshrimps' version, the player must run across the fields while the Guardian's threatening warning music plays, hiding behind trees before the music rises and lasers hit. Despite describing their version of "Red Light, Green Light" as "the most intense" they've ever played, the Redditor manages to escape the Guardian unscathed.

The Zelda series is home to some terrifying enemies, but Breath of the Wild's Guardians are particularly noteworthy. While the foes aren't as visually scary as some of Zelda's enemies, they can inflict a lot of damage, and if players lack suitable armor and equipment, they can be challenging to defeat in combat. The Guardian music, which warns players of imminent attacks, can easily get hearts racing after a few bad encounters with the ancient bots, making Guardians the perfect stand-in for Squid Game's "Red Light, Green Light" robot threat.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild offers players a lot of freedom when it comes to choosing how to tackle the world, enemies, and bosses. While "Red Light, Green Light" likely wasn't on Nintendo's agenda while developing the title, the fact a version of it can be played in-game is a testament to its creativity, design, and intuitive enemies. With Breath of the Wild 2 releasing in 2022, many fans are hoping to see a similar level of immersion and detail in the sequel. While new details on the game, including its official title, are expected to be revealed in the coming months, fans will probably have to wait to get their hands on BOTW 2 to find out whether or not they'll be able to play "Red Light, Green Light" with its enemies.
