The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fans responsible for the massive Second Wind DLC mod are adding a host of new weapons and items. The combined efforts of over 50 fans and modders have come together to create this mod pack, with new questlines, weapons, NPCs, enemies, and game mechanics available. While other BotW mods have popped up over the years, few have risen to such a considerable scope.

Breath of the Wild is one of the biggest Legend of Zelda titles to come out in the past 20 years, having broken away from the typical Zelda formula to great success. Instead of featuring formulaic dungeons based around a single item used for all of the puzzles, BotW is more about exploring the land of Hyrule and finding unique ways to overcome obstacles. Puzzles presented in BotW have endless solutions, and the player is free to use their creativity to whatever extent they wish. The freedom presented in Breath of the Wild is something that players had been asking for for years, and Nintendo has finally listened.

Second Wind is a story-based expansion created by fans, for fans. It has been in the works for some time, and aims to add new content to the game in the same way an official DLC pack from Nintendo would, adding content on top of the existing game without affecting the core gameplay and story. As reported by Nintendo Everything, the creators have taken the liberty of fixing some aspects of the game with overhauls, bug fixes, tweaks and new gameplay elements that fill some much-needed holes in the game. The mod also incorporates a completely overhauled shop system.

The pack is rich in new content, adding in new mobs, enemies, animals, weapons, food, armor sets, and craftable items. Some of these items and mobs are tributes to older Zelda titles, including music tracks and mask designs from Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. The mod seeks to bridge the gap between Breath of the Wild and the other Zelda titles, filling in where fans think the game fits in the timeline and adding more references to the franchise as a whole.

Players who have run out of things to do in the vanilla Breath of the Wild should consider picking up this mod pack, as it adds a plethora of new story content and quests to complete. The mod adds even more endgame tasks for players to take on. The battles against the Ganon Blights repeatable and more difficult than ever, with the four bosses having more health, higher damage and a faster and more responsive AI. To help fight against these bosses, new endgame weapons can be found and equipped to help the player feel like a true hero of Hyrule.

Fans of the series owe it to themselves to give this mod a go once it is complete, as the development is only at 60% at the time of this writing. New dungeons and fights are still set to be added to the game. Unfortunately, this mod requires a PC and an emulator to play, and those call for a powerful PC to run and some technical knowledge. Still, for those who are yearning to explore the kingdom of Hyrule yet again, it's a very tempting proposition.
