In another example of how varied any single playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be, one player has commanded an army of Cuccos to take down an unsuspecting Yiga Clan member. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now over four years old, but fans are still discovering new and entertaining ways to complete the game. From the creative use of Runes to solve BOTW's Korok puzzles to manipulating the environment to Link’s advantage, there is no right or wrong way to approach the game.

While Nintendo has changed many aspects of the gameplay within its most-recent mainline Zelda game, there are some things in Breath of the Wild that have been carried over from previous titles. One example of this is the game's Cuccos or, as they are affectionately known within the Zelda community, “The Cucco Revenge Squad.” Cuccos throughout Zelda’s rich history have been there to remind players to respect the balance of nature. Despite not quite being an enemy within the series, if Cuccos are subjected to enough torment from Link, they will retaliate. This retaliation can often be devastating and fleeing inside a nearby building is usually the best way for players to avoid losing multiple hearts in one fell swoop.

One player has taken the amusing Cucco mechanic within Breath of the Wild and used it to their advantage. FriendOfKi uploaded a video to Reddit that shows off how, with the right motivation, Cuccos can actually become a formidable ally. In the clip, FriendOfKi allows Link to be attacked by a Yiga Clan member while holding a Cucco aloft. As FriendOfKi presumably planned, one of the Yiga Clan member’s arrows appears to strike the Cucco, sending it into a frenzy. From here on in, Cuccos begin to swarm the assailant, as they seek to avenge their injured comrade. Against such a tirade of feathers and beaks, the Yiga Clan member doesn’t stand a chance, and soon all that is left of them is a handful of rupees and a bunch of mighty bananas.

The freedom of play in Breath of the Wild is a break from the norm, especially when compared to previous entries in the Zelda series. In earlier games, players were directed on a fairly linear path with the aid of companion NPCs such as Skyward Sword’s Fi or Ocarina of Time’s Navi. In BOTW, users are left to their own devices, able to use Link's set of tools and weapons to tackle the game's bosses and quests in almost any order they choose. This has enabled players to find new ways to battle and conquer the title, with new discoveries and tips still being found even years after launch.

As a staple feature of the series, it's likely that Zelda's sometimes-aggressive Cuccos will be making a return for BOTW 2. The highly-anticipated sequel to Breath of the Wild is still slated to release this year. While there has been no official launch date announced as yet, there are rumors that Nintendo is aiming to have the fan-dubbed Breath of the Wild 2 launch by November, which means new gameplay details - and perhaps a look at the new Cuccos - could be coming soon.
