A new behind-the-scenes video for the Borderlands movie has shown off the stars, video game-accurate props, and other glimpses of the upcoming film. Based on the popular game series from Gearbox Software, Borderlands is directed by Eli Roth from a screenplay written by Roth and Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Jack Black as Claptrap.

The Borderlands video games take place in the lawless outer reaches of a far-future galaxy, where powerful mega-corporations rule with iron fists and bands of outlaws and mercenaries battle over territory and treasure. Players take control of one of several vault hunters – guns for hire in search of fame and fortune. The new movie will pull mainly from the first game's events, setting its action on the wasteland world of Pandora.

A new behind-the-scenes video of the Borderlands film set released via IGN provides an in-depth look at how the new movie is shaping up. The footage includes highly detailed replicas of the Borderlands guns, discussions with the cast and crew, and a few looks at the ongoing production, all led by Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford. Check out the Borderlands behind-the-scenes coverage below, which begins at the video’s 50:50 mark.

So far, it looks like the Borderlands movie is doing an excellent job of staying loyal to the games in its aesthetic and overall tone. The game-accurate props and high level of involvement from the game development team are especially encouraging, hopefully elevating Borderlands above the sea of dismal game adaptations that have been the norm for so long. The film’s cast is also incredibly promising, with an assembled ensemble of stars who’ve proven their ability to balance action and comedy.

Of course, loyalty to the source material may not be enough to make Borderlands a roaring success. The most recent core game in the series, 2019’s Borderlands 3, received notable criticism for its overreliance on low-brow humor and pop culture references. Fortunately, the game still had its fun and rewarding gameplay to fall back on – something the upcoming movie won’t be able to do. Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart are fully capable of leading a film that’s both hilarious and action-packed, and they’re great picks to bring the roles of Lilith and Roland to live-action. But it remains to be seen if that will be enough to make Borderlands more than just the latest in a long line of lackluster video game movies.
