Eli Roth's Borderlands adaptation has cast Edgar Ramirez as Atlas. Ramirez joins quite the expansive cast, including stars Jack Black as Claptrap, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, and Haley Bennett in an undisclosed role. Borderlands was announced in February of 2020, but details have remained slim as to what's in store for the film. Greenblatt posted a picture from the set, indicating that production has started on the film which is currently undated.

Borderlands began as a popular open-world video game adventure taking place on the planet of Pandora. The game followed Vault Hunter Roland (Hart) who is searching for a mythical vault that holds advanced alien technology. While the main thrust of the game is the search for this vault, the open-world format allows the player to take on various side quests and mercenary ventures to increase their arsenal and weather the obstacles in place on the wasteland planet.

In control of the universe is Atlas, a CEO of an arms manufacturing company at the center of the game. According to Deadline, Ramirez has been cast in this role, but it's unclear how expansive the role will be. Alongside the casting announcement, the official synopsis of Borderlands was revealed:

In the movie Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas (Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Black), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on the game from Gearbox and 2K, one of the bestselling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to Borderlands.

Ramirez was most recently seen in HBO's The Undoing, but the Venezuelan actor has an expansive list of credits that prove he's perfect for the villainous role. Ramirez has also starred in The Assassination of Gianni Versace as the titular fashion designer and, for that role, he garnered several awards nominations including an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Blanchett, too, is an awards mainstay and it sounds like her character will have a complicated relationship with Ramirez's in the film. How that plays out will be a sight to behold.

The Borderlands video games are known for their wild aesthetic and their unique humor which has been both praised and derided by fans depending on the entry. Video game adaptations are hard to pull off and Borderlands will be no different. Roth has an entire universe at his disposal and how he utilizes that will be key to the film's success. The formidable cast is yet another sign that Borderlands may be able to pull off what very few video game adaptations do, satisfying both longtime fans of the series and bringing in new viewers that find the world equally as engaging.
