To celebrate the second anniversary of the release of Borderlands 3, developer Gearbox Software is launching five weeks of in-game events beginning on August 12. The actual two-year anniversary will be on September 13, which the studio has other plans for but has not yet revealed all it will do to celebrate.

There are some significant changes happening behind the scenes involving the Borderlands franchise. Earlier this summer, multiple senior developers on Borderlands 3 left Gearbox in order to create their own indie title. Shortly after that, a Borderlands spinoff called Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was officially announced and it is currently slated for release in 2022. In spite of all of these changes, however, Gearbox is still putting support behind its most recent creation as Borderlands 3 nears its two-year anniversary.

Thanks to a report by VG247, players can gain some insight into what the festivities will be for the special occasion. The first event is called Loot the Universe and it will run from August 12 to September 9. During those four weeks, specific types of legendary loot will have increased chances of dropping on one of the Borderlands 3 planets. Pandora will be the prime location during the first week followed by Promethea starting August 19, Eden-6 commencing August 26, and finally Nekrotafeyo beginning September 2. This is not the first time Borderlands 3 has done a Loot the Universe event as one was held from April to May in 2020.

Once Loot the Universe is finished, the festivities for the actual anniversary date kick-off. Two mini-events called "Mayhem Made Mild" and "Show Me the Eridium" will begin and coincide with one another starting September 9 running through the rest of the week. "Mayhem Made Mild" will have players only encounter easy modifiers in mayhem mode while "Show Me the Eridium" grants increased Eridium drops and item discounts. Gearbox also teased that it has more specifically planned for September 13, but did not say more as "it doesn’t want to ruin the surprise."

It is reassuring to see a studio put excited support behind a game in the face of key creative leaders of Borderlands 3 departing while a new title in the same franchise is scheduled for launch next year. Fans should take the opportunity to relish what the Borderlands name, and more specifically Borderlands 3, means to them before the property moves on. There seems to be a lot coming for Borderlands fans both in gaming and beyond, so there will be plenty of participants eager to participate in the anniversary celebrations.
