Sacha Baron Cohen may be the doting family man in real life, but on-screen, he is the man of many faces, each of them as diverse and exceptional as the personalities attached to them. We have Ali G, the British chav who aspires to be Jamaican; Admiral General Aladeen, the immature, misogynistic North African dictator; Borat Sagdiyev, the ill-mannered Kazakh reporter; and Brüno Gehard, the gay Austrian TV show host, among others.

Each of Baron Cohen's mockumentaries involves interactions with people who have no idea that they are talking to a fictional persona, which is the source of both extreme hilarity and fatal danger (Baron-Cohen almost got himself killed by a crowd of homophobes during the finale of Brüno). Since Borat and Brüno are his most famous characters, we have prepared a list of reasons why each is the better mockumentary of the two.

Borat: Borat Calls Out Racism In The American South

When Borat travels across the US, he meets a lot of people, including a group of seemingly lovely people in Birmingham, Alabama. However, on the way to the Alabama home, Baron-Cohen displays a scene that shows us the name of the private road leading to the house: Secession Drive.

The word "secession" here refers to the US Civil War, in which several southern states fought for the right to own slaves. When this was denied by Lincoln, these states seceded from the US government, forming a temporary nation known as the Confederate States of America. The use of the same word here implies that Borat's Alabama hosts still hold on to this antiquated notion and that they still, perhaps unconsciously, desire what their ancestors wanted.

Brüno: Brüno Laughs At The Absurdity Of Gay Conversion

Bruno Gay Conversion

In one scene, Brüno has decided that he wants to be straight, as most celebrities he sees on the red carpet have their arms around a woman. To help him achieve his goal, he meets with Pastor Jody Trautwein, a noted "gay converter". Gay conversion is practiced around the world, mostly by religious figures who try to convince struggling gay people to change their "immoral" behavior.

Baron-Cohen shows his disgust for this by having Brüno say sexually suggestive things to the Pastor and asking him if he was "hitting on him" because "that was, like, really hot, the whole speech."

Borat: Borat Plays A Prank On Bob Barr

Making Bob Barr, a highly conservative Republican politician, look like a tool is not exactly a difficult job -- he usually manages to do this by himself. Barr's statements on gun ownership are positively draconian -- he insists that every American should be allowed to own guns without restriction. Barr was also highly opposed to abortion, same-sex marriage, religious freedom and taxation when Borat was filmed (he has since recanted several of his earlier stances).

However, for audiences in 2006, watching Borat feed Barr a lump of cheese made from his "wife's tit" was incredibly funny, especially as Barr's face changes from neutral to utterly disgusted -- but he doesn't stop chewing!

Brüno: Brüno Shows Us That The Fashion Industry Can Be Vapid

As the host of FunkyZeit, Brüno attends several fashion shows as a reporter. He is shown asking supermodel Heather Hahn if modeling is an easy job. When she says that "it's very hard, standing in heels all day, and everyone's watching you," Brüno says that he understands how difficult it is since models have to "remember to put your right leg forward, and then your left leg forward, and then, like, which one now?"

In another scene, we see Brüno showing us the main aspect of his nutrition regimen, which is to vomit into a silver urn. This refers to the dangerous diets many models are forced into to retain their figure, which leads to eating disorders and poor health.

Borat: Borat Makes A Point About Blind Patriotism

While in Salem, Virginia, Borat visits a rodeo, where he has a conversation with a man who tells him to shave his mustache because he "looks like a Muslim" and he might "get mistaken for a terrorist". After this, Borat is called in front of a huge audience to sing the US national anthem.

He agitates the crowd with absurd statements such as, "May your George Bush drink the blood of every single man, woman and child of Iraq", but receives loud cheers and applause anyway. In this scene, Baron-Cohen tries to show us that patriotism for patriotism's sake is meaningless and that having blind faith in one's government is the exact opposite of freedom.

Brüno: Brüno Pokes Fun At Celebrity Philanthropy

Recently fired from his job at FunkyZeit, Brüno plans to start a show in LA called "A-List Celebrity Max Out". As his first guest, he invites Paula Abdul, who is involved in charity foundations. Since he does not have furniture, he asks the Mexican immigrants that are cleaning the pool to get on all fours to provide seats for him and Paula.

While Paula does react with surprise, she takes a seat on one of the men, while she talks about how "helping other people is vital to my life." Baron-Cohen's intention for this skit was to show how celebrities don't always practice what they preach. Luckily for him, Paula found his gag "hysterical."

Borat: Borat Shows Us That Religion May Have Meaningless Rituals

After finding out that Pamela Anderson was not a virgin, as he had hoped, Borat falls into a depression. He visits a United Pentecostal camp meeting where he sees people praying and cheering in the name of Jesus.

While all of this is perfectly understandable, when Borat asks the meeting leaders to help him with his heartbreak, they perform what looks like an exorcism. Multiple men place their hands on Borat's head and start screeching random gibberish, asking him to do so, as well. They believe that they are "speaking in tongues", a reference to Acts 2 in the New Testament of the Bible, which is a sign that they have been baptized by the Holy Spirit.

Brüno: Brüno Exposes The Horrifying Nature Of Child Beauty Pageants

When Brüno adopts (buys) a baby from Nairobi, he holds a casting for "the hottest baby photoshoot ever." Several people come with their children, believing it is a real photoshoot. Brüno asks them if their child is comfortable doing things like, "being around bees, wasps and hornets," "operating antiquated heavy machinery," or "undergoing extreme diets and liposuction."

Shockingly, the parents answer positively to each question, however horrible they sound. This is the unfortunate reality of child beauty pageants, where many parents force their children into extreme situations to win the crown.

Borat: Borat Relieves Himself Right Outside Trump Tower

This scene, a fan favorite, shows Borat pooping in the hedges outside Trump Tower at Columbia Circle in NYC, with the sign displaying the name clearly visible. He may not have known that Trump would become the president of the US, but shows his disrespect for him anyway.

In fact, Baron-Cohen has taken a dig at Trump, again, with his new show, Who Is America? (2018). He says that when Trump was elected, it made him "disappointed and angry," but decided to convert his frustration and powerlessness into television satire.

Brüno: Brüno Records A Charity Video

Once he finally achieves his dream of becoming a celebrity, Brüno gets a bunch of musicians together to record a charity video (for what -- nobody knows). The video contains superstars like Elton John, Bono, Snoop Dogg, Sting, Chris Martin and Slash (the guitarist from Guns N' Roses).

Baron-Cohen is parodying the famous "We Are The World" song recorded for African famine relief by the supergroup USA For Africa in 1985. Here, however, the lyrics are changed to reflect the comic nature of the song, with lines like, "I am the Austrian Jesus ... the white Obama" and "Stop fighting, North and South Korea, you're both basically Chinese."
