Warner Bros. is still developing Booster Gold according to writer and director Greg Berlanti. A few years back, reports surfaced that Berlanti - who is always busy keeping track of the Arrowverse on The CW - was developing a solo movie for Booster Gold. The notion of the time-traveling, fame-seeking hero potentially getting his own movie came as a surprise. Those feelings were only heightened when Berlanti said he was developing it with the idea that Booster Gold wouldn't take place in the DCEU.

Over recent months and as new leadership is being brought in, what exactly Warner Bros. is planning for its DC movies continues to be a bit unclear. They want to still make their shared universe, but they've also decided to launch a still unnamed banner that will tell "Elseworld" stories. The potentially Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker will be the start of this, but we don't know what else. Berlanti now insists Booster Gold is still being considered, and it sounds like a perfect fit for that banner too.

The Wrap spoke to Berlanti as he promotes his new film Love, Simon and he confirmed the state of Booster Gold is still very much alive. Zack Stentz (ThorX-Men: First Class) wrote the earlier draft of the script, which is now complete. According to Berlanti, the film's fate is in WB's hands as they try to decide "how it’s going to fit into their greater landscape." Berlanti said:

It’s still in development with DC. I wrote a draft, they’re trying to figure out both the distance that we still have to travel and how we want to execute it.

Even though Berlanti says Booster Gold is still in development, it sounds like it is in a holding pattern more than anything. As is the case with several DC projects, Warner Bros. is still figuring out what to do next. New DC Films president Walter Hamada will guide the ship, and ultimately be the one who makes the decision as to whether or not Booster Gold happens. Since Berlanti's movie was announced under previous leadership, Hamada could cancel the project, like the current concept enough to green light it, or even decide to rework it entirely so that it could be part of the DCEU.

Considering Booster Gold's typically lighter portrayal, this movie would be a very different inclusion in the "Elseworlds" banner along with Joker. While its understandable why WB would want to capitalize on the Joker's name and do something different and more adult with talented people, Booster Gold could be a great family movie. As the DCEU continues to move in a bit more lighthearted direction (see: Shazam!'s look and new directors for Flashpoint), a character like Michael Jon Carter would be a perfect fit. Since Booster Gold is still in development, maybe that will happen - but there's still a long way to go before we find that out.
