Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are getting their own comic, as the heroes will team up in Blue & Gold. On Wednesday, DC Comics announced the eight-issue miniseries which will star the longtime friends. Written by Dan Jurgens with art by Ryan Sook, the story will feature the former Justice Leaguers navigating in the social media era, which obviously gains the attention of Booster Gold.

Booster Gold is a fame-hungry hero from the future, who cares deeply about being a beloved figure. Using technology acquired in the future, such as a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring, Booster Gold traveled back in time and was later accepted into the Justice League. Blue Beetle, meanwhile, is a wealthy, genius-level hero who doesn't have any powers, but often uses his smarts to his advantage. When both heroes joined the Justice League in Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis' iconic JL run, they became best friends. While Booster Gold and Blue Beetle stand on their own as heroes, their friendship has become an integral part of their characterizations.

DC Comics just announced Blue & Gold by Dan Jurgens and Ryan Sook, which will see Jurgens return to the character he created more than 30 years ago. The series centers around Booster Gold (and Skeets) trying to get the public's attention by becoming a social media star. Booster will call on his friend Blue Beetle to help him understand technology, social media, and influencers, as Ted Kord has resources and gadgets that could up his profile. The eight-issue series will feature covers for issue #1 from Sook and Dave Johnson.

  • Watch out, evildoers, our heroes are live and online!
  • Desperate to regain the spotlight, Booster Gold looks to attract the public’s (and Justice League’s) attention the same way any washed-up, second-rate hero would—social media. The not-so-tech-savvy hero from the 25th century enlists the help of his best friend, Blue Beetle, who possesses both the money and the brains to help his old pal navigate the scary world of internet influencers.

The series has been teased as being a light-hearted romp with plenty of humor, while also suggesting Booster Gold and Blue Beetle might get redemption. Honestly, a fun series packed with heart and laughs is perfect for the two heroes, especially since their last adventure in Heroes in Crisis was quite dark. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle work best when the characters are approached with humor to balance out potentially heavier moments and themes.

It appears readers are in for a treat with Blue & Gold, as Booster Gold stands out as a hero who would foolishly try to become an influencer and have no idea how to do it. Seeing him and Blue Beetle navigate social media together is a perfect modern story for the best friends. It's great to see the dynamic duo back in the spotlight, even more so with Jurgens at the helm. Blue & Gold from DC Comics will arrive in comic shops and online on July 20.
