The Boondock Saints creator Troy Duffy returns to the property for a TV reboot to be titled The Boondock Saints: Origins. The original film debuted in 1999 and followed Irish Catholic twin brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy MacManus (Norman Reedus) who stumbled into a world of vigilantism after getting into a bar fight with the local Russian mob. Though the film holds a 20 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a cult favorite - and boasts a 91 percent audience score. The fan support of the movie earned it a sequel in 2009, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, though that was less well received by viewers (it has a 58 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes).
However, The Boondock Saints has remained a cult favorite in the near two decades since its initial release and the creative team behind the film are returning to the property with a TV reboot that will seemingly take place before the events of the 1999 movie.
Don Carmody Television announced they'll be reteaming with Duffy to produce The Boondock Saints: Origins television series with Duffy and DCTV's Carmody and David Cormican on board as executive producers. DCTV today launched a fan-focused pre-order campaign at BoondocksBack.com through a video featuring The Boondock Saints star David Della Rocco, which you can view above. Duffy said of the new television series:
“A television series is the perfect medium for storytelling inside the world of our beloved blue collar super heroes. The brothers have always been defenders of the people, justice, fairness and the city of Boston. In this sensitive time of human rights unrest, government scandal and civil corruption, there couldn’t be a better moment to re-launch the brothers iconic brand of justice in the Cradle of Democracy.”
Those that pre-order The Boondock Saints: Origins Collector's box set will get the first season of the series before anyone else. It's unclear at this time when the series will premiere and where the show will eventually land, whether on a network or streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon. Additionally, beyond Duffy and his fellow producers, DCTV hasn't revealed who will be involved in writing, directing, and producing the series, nor have the stars of The Boondock Saints: Origins been announced.
The Boondock Saints television series was first reported to be in development in 2013, while a third installment in the MacManus brothers series seemed to be stuck in the development phase - though Duffy did have an idea for a title for that third Boondock Saints movie. Now, with the title The Boondock Saints: Origins, it's clear the television series will follow Connor and Murphy MacManus - and their friend Rocco, no doubt - prior to the events of the original 1999 movie.
Of course, it's unclear how Origins will tell a compelling origin story for the MacManus brothers since the first movie follows their gradual evolution from factory workers to full-blown vigilantes. However, given that there's plenty of history to the character of their father, Noah MacManus aka Il Duce (Billy Connolly), Origins may tell the story of father and sons that was only hinted at in The Boondock Saints. That said, with so little revealed about The Boondock Saints: Origins as of yet, it remains to be seen how exactly Duffy and DCTV will bring the property back to life - and when exactly fans of the cult classic movie will get to see this new TV series.
We’ll keep you updated on The Boondock Saints: Origins as more information becomes available.
