Boondock Saints 3 With Original Stars Happening, Filming Starts May 2022

The Boondock Saints III has been greenlit with original stars returning and filming to begin in May 2022. The Boondock Saints was released in 1999 and follows fraternal twin Irish brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus, who go on a vigilante killing spree to rid their hometown of criminals, all in the name of God. Starring The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery as the two brothers, the film also starred Willem Dafoe as a cop on their trail and Billy Connolly as their partner in crime.

Written and directed by Troy Duffy, a sequel was made in 2009, Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, which also starred Reedus, Flanery, and Connolly, as well as Julie Benz and Clifton Collins Jr. Both films were box office disappointments, but garnered a tremendous fan following, making The Boondock Saints franchise a major cult hit and prompting the call for the continued adventures of the MacManus brothers. A Boondock Saints TV show was rumored for a while and numerous issues between the cast and Duffy stalled progress, but apparently that's all about to change.

Update: We have confirmed that The Boondock Saints III is officially on the way with the original stars and writer/director Duffy back for more shenanigans with the twins. Both Duffy and Flanery wrote the script for the third film (with input from Reedus) and are prepping to shoot the film in May of next year. The plan is to turn the franchise around and make it a "John-Wick style" global action franchise. Here's what Duffy had to say about the sequel:

“The fans have loved these characters for 20 years. They use terms of endearment like ‘the Brothers’ or ‘the Boys.’ We left them in jail at the end of Boondock 2 and fans want to know what happened to them. Norman and Sean have been a driving force to keep this franchise on track and break some new ground story-wise. The fans have been waiting. They literally ask about it daily, and I am really excited to be working with Impossible Dream to make Boondock III a reality.”

In terms of the story, the last film left the MacManus brothers in jail, so the third entry will see them older and "coming out into a brand new world" that's very different and at odds with their place in it. Duffy says that one brother wants to continue their work, while the other doesn't and that they will have a new enemy this time around; politicians. Duffy elaborated on the choice of the villain, which was influenced by fan feedback, saying, "...the type of people we face today in our society, is unlike any we’ve faced before. And that brings [the brothers] together and they say, we cannot turn our backs on this." In addition to a new enemy, the film will have some new, yet-to-be-named stars joining in, as well as more polished action, according to producer Shaun Redick, who says, “We’re going to elevate this one. We just worked with the John Wick team, 87Eleven, and we’re going to introduce some of the stunt guys to Troy and see if we can bring them in. They did all the John Wicks, Atomic Blonde, these high-octane, badass action films.”

The Boondock Saints is one of the most popular cult films of all time, with fans all over the world quoting it, cosplaying it, and even getting tattoos of it. While mainstream critics have often trashed it, there's no denying the passion for the franchise from those that enjoy it the most. With Reedus becoming a household name due to his popularity in The Walking Dead, it will be curious to see if The Boondock Saints III is able to lure in that audience when it debuts, which would be a massive amount of new eyeballs on the films if so. With the promise of new stars joining the film and some more polished action a la John Wick, not to mention the wild, erratic sensibilities that Duffy brings to it all, this is sure to be another healthy notch in the cult chain for The Boondock Saints.
