Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 8, "Chapter 16: The Rescue."

The Book of Boba Fett, seemingly a Star Wars spinoff show (or movie), is coming to Disney+ in December 2021, as confirmed in The Mandalorian season 2 finale. The Mandalorian season 2, episode 8, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," wrapped up its current arc, but also made sure to sow some major seeds for the future of Star Wars. Chief among them is Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), who returned at the beginning of season 2, and is now an even greater part of Disney and Lucasfilm's plans.

Having first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, before receiving an ignominious death in Return of the Jedi, fans have long hoped to see more of Boba Fett in Star Wars. Planned movies centering on the bounty hunter never came to fruition, and the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) had seemingly taken his spot in the Star Wars galaxy. That was until The Mandalorian season 2 premiere, which confirmed that Boba Fett had indeed escaped the sarlacc. Having since joined up with Din Djarin, "The Rescue" sets him off on his own path.

In The Mandalorian season 2 finale's post-credits scene, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) return to Tatooine and, more specifically, Jabba's Palace, where Bib Fortuna (Matthew Wood) now reigns. Boba and Fennec clean house, with the former taking his place as the new ruler of the Palace and, presumably, crime on Tatooine. The episode then reveals that The Book of Boba Fett is coming in December 2021, ostensibly setting up a whole new Star Wars spinoff show. There's no confirmation yet on exactly what form The Book of Boba Fett will take, so it is possible that it will become part of The Mandalorian season 3, which itself will release Christmas 2021, but it's worth noting that a Boba Fett spinoff had previously been reported to film before season 3.

Boba Fett and Fennec Shand in The Mandalorian Season 2 Finale

It is possible that The Book of Boba Fett will be a limited or event series, or even a Disney+ movie, leading up to the release of The Mandalorian season 3, which would allow Disney to tell the story without interfering with that of Din Djarin and Baby Yoda. The reveal comes on the back of Disney announcing 10 upcoming Star Wars shows, including spinoffs focused on Ahsoka Tano and the Rangers of the New Republic, both of which will be set during the same timeline as The Mandalorian. With Star Wars linking these groups of shows together, then it would be easy to slot The Book of Boba Fett in alongside them.

As to what The Book of Boba Fett's story will be, the post-credits scene of The Mandalorian season 2's finale does offer a tease of what to expect, without giving any firm details. Boba Fett has assumed a position of power, though given this is several years after the death of Jabba the Hutt, it remains to be seen just how much he will wield. As well as running the show on Tatooine alongside Fennec, it's also possible that the spinoff will include flashbacks, revealing just how Boba Fett survived the sarlacc and what happened to him after that, a story that The Mandalorian notably hasn't told yet. Regardless of what form The Book of Boba Fett takes, it's clear that the bounty hunter is a big part of Star Wars' future.
