Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Book of Boba Fett episode 5!

Episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett puts Din Djarin front and center, showing some of the aftermaths of The Mandalorian season 2 and leaving viewers with more questions regarding Djarin’s Mandalorian tribe and his future adventures. The Mandalorian has proven to be one of the most popular Star Wars properties yet, and The Book of Boba Fett surely pleased viewers by bringing back Din Djarin. Not only did the episode give devote its runtime to Djarin’s whereabouts following Grogu’s rescue, but it also further explored the canon lore of Mandalorians and teased storylines for The Mandalorian season 3.

Din Djarin is a Mandalorian foundling and bounty hunter who found himself becoming a father figure to an infant Jedi in The Mandalorian. Djarin’s quest to return Grogu to the Jedi led to surprising appearances by iconic Star Wars characters, such as Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, and Bo-Katan Kryze, in addition to featuring the return of Boba Fett. By the end of season 2, Djarin inadvertently became the latest wielder of the Darksaber, granting him the right to rule the Mandalorian clans and earning the ire of Bo-Katan. Djarin and Kryze seem poised to become enemies in The Mandalorian season 3.

Meanwhile, Grogu has rejoined the Jedi Order, thanks to Luke Skywalker, leading some viewers to ponder what a third season of The Mandalorian will be like without the now-iconic duo of him and Djarin. In addition to hinting at Djarin’s reunion with Grogu and his potential reluctant leadership of the Mandalorian clans, the episode proves that Djarin can star in compelling stories on his own once more. “Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian” sets the stage for The Mandalorian season 3, showing Djarin begin to train in lightsaber combat and acquire a new ship to replace the Razor Crest, along with emphasizing his kinship with Boba Fett who Djarin offers his services to for free.

Why Did Din Djarin Resume Bounty Hunting?

Din Djarin in Book of Boba Fett

Din Djarin is a bounty hunter by trade, who uses his Mandalorian training and weaponry to make a living as an honorable mercenary. This would have presumably changed, however, with his acquisition of the Darksaber, which put him in the position to unite the Mandalorian clans under his rule. The Darksaber was previously held by Pre Vizsla during a time when Mandalorian society was pacifist, and his successor, Maul, sought to use Mandalorian warriors to oppose his Sith Master. After Bo-Katan failed to rule Mandalore, the weapon became Moff Gideon’s, so for Djarin to be the first Mandalorian to wield the weapon since Gideon, it seems strange that he’d immediately go back to his old life rather than try to his newfound position with his reluctance to rule, especially considering how highly sought-after the Darksaber is by opportunists like Bo-Katan.

Where Is Bo-Katan Kryze?

Why Bo Katan doesnt have a right to the darksaber

Similarly, Bo-Katan Kryze’s absence from the episode is odd, considering that her primary motivation throughout The Mandalorian season 2 was acquiring the Darksaber and installing herself as Mand’alor once more. Kryze is a member of the Death Watch, a Mandalorian fundamentalist terrorist group that destabilized their world in their alliance with Maul’s Shadow Collective. Kryze herself failed to protect her people from the Empire twice, yet her same opportunism remained in her The Mandalorian appearances, with her only helping Djarin if it furthered her goal of ruling Mandalore again. Kryze seemed poised to challenge Djarin for possession of the Darksaber before Luke Skywalker’s intervention, and the explanation for how and why Djarin departed Kryze with the weapon remains to be explained.

Who Made The Beskar Spear?

Moff Gideon vs Mando Darksaber in The Mandalorian

Din Djarin’s beskar spear, which he acquired in The Mandalorian season 2, is revealed to be one of the few weapons that can penetrate beskar armor, according to The Armorer. Deemed a threat to all Mandalorians, The Armorer and Djarin resolve to reforge the spear, but its existence may prompt viewers to wonder who created it. The most obvious answer is Morgan Elsbeth (or somebody within her Imperial contingent), but it also might have been created by a Mandalorian from another clan. Just as the Children of the Watch have specific rules and customs, another Mandalorian clan might have forged the weapon as a weapon to use against rival clans.

What Did The Armorer Make For Grogu?

Believing that beskar shouldn’t be used for melee weaponry, The Armorer melts down Din Djarin’s beskar spear and uses it to make an item for Grogu. The episode doesn’t reveal what it is specifically, aside from chains being part of it. The item is small, so Djarin might have commissioned a suit of beskar chainmail armor for Grogu. When folded up and wrapped, the armor might be small enough to fit in Djarin’s palm and the extremely durable beskar would make for a useful protective suit for Grogu. If this is the case, Djarin might be seeking peace of mind by providing Grogu with something that’ll protect him against lightsaber blades, which he might be worried about, given his accidental self-inflicted lightsaber wound earlier in the episode.

Will Grogu Become The Second Mandalorian Jedi?

The Darksaber was constructed by the first and only Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre Vizsla, as revealed in Star Wars Rebels and reiterated in The Book of Boba Fett. Din Djarin makes a point to highlight the fundamental differences between the Jedi Order and Mandalorians, philosophically. The Jedi forbid attachment while Mandalorians are defined by it, yet Tarre Vizsla managed to be part of both cultures. Vizsla might have bent the rules of both cultures, neither eschewing attachment nor being controlled by it, making him similar to the Legends-era New Jedi Order members. With Grogu being a part of Clan Mudhorn and being trained by Luke Skywalker (the founder of the New Jed Order in the Legends continuity), he might grow up to become the second Mandalorian Jedi.

Why Does Din Djarin Replace The Razor Crest With A Starfighter?

The Mandalorian Grogu Return N1 Starfighter

Din Djarin’s bounty hunting vessel, the Razor Crest, was destroyed in The Mandalorian season 2 upon being struck by a blaster cannon blast from Moff Gideon’s light cruiser. Upon returning to Tatooine, Djarin and Peli Motto refurbish and modify a Naboo N1 Starfighter, which becomes Djarin’s new ship. Djarin has resumed his bounty hunter activities, yet his new ship is a poor fit for his occupation, considering that it has no cargo hold, cells for living bounties, or living quarter for long voyages. The ship is well-suited for battling other craft and evading pursuers, but it’s inefficient for Djarin’s vocation. The Book of Boba Fett might be implying that Djarin is gradually growing out of his bounty hunting occupation, or he’s significantly limiting his methods by choosing a starfighter as his new ship.
