Netflix has been killing it with the book adaptation lately. The standout example is Birdbox, of course. But there are dozens of others that have hit the small screen and done well. From series like Umbrella Academy to movie adaptations based on novels.
And there are more heading our way. It seems that Netflix has learned its lesson well. They know that adaptations sell. More importantly, they’ve learned that well-done adaptations do even better. So that gives us fans plenty to look forward to. Here are some of the adaptations heading our way.
This adaptation is probably no surprise to many fans out there. After all, Netflix quite literally produced the comics (for the first time ever). Magic Order is a dark series, focusing on warring mage families. It isn't afraid of getting graphic (no pun intended) and shows some of the more disturbing elements of magical families.
Jupiter's Legacy is a superhero drama, which is fairly unique. The series is about the fist generation of superheroes to hit the streets back in the 1930s. Though it's set in present day, to give you an idea of how that's going to go. And the Netflix adaptation has been moving along smoothly.
They've cast their main characters, so hopefully we'll be seeing something soon.
Locke & Key is one of those series that has been feeling cursed, of late. The adaptation has been in the works for many years – changing hands again and again. But this time around, it seems like it's actually going to stick. So if you're looking for a dark Lovecraftian series, be sure to keep your eyes open for this one.
This may seem a bit strange, but Empress was chosen for adaptation before the novel even officially released.
But it has Mark Miller connected to the project, so that sort of explains things. It's also going to be a movie, instead of a series. But that's okay. The movie will follow Queen Emporia. She's married to a dictator, so clearly not a good dude. But she'll do everything it takes to protect her children from him.
7Seeds is a popular manga that Netflix has optioned the rights for. Understandably, the series is going to be an animated one, and it'll hopefully release in the next few weeks. It's already been pushed back once, so we're not entirely sure on that.
The manga series itself is complete, and was a survival-focused thriller. So it should do well on Netflix's platform.
In the Tall Grass is a novel written by Stephen King, and his son, Joe Hill. The novel (and presumably the series) follows two siblings who get caught up in a terrifying situation. And all because they wanted to help the little boy they heard calling for help.
In the Tall Grass is currently in development, but hopefully, they'll be releasing teasers soon.
Cursed is a twist on the classic tale of King Arthur. The teaser for this one has already dropped, so if you're curious, you should check it out. It follows young sorcerers Nimue while she helps Arthur on the very classic tale.
V-Wars is short for Vampire Wars. It's a series which was written by many authors, and that makes it so unique in the world of books. It'll also make for a great adaptation, if we're lucky. The adaptation is starring Ian Somerhalder, from Vampire Diaries.
So at least we know he can handle vampires.
That's correct! Netflix managed to get their hands on the rights for the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Their series doesn't yet have a name, but we're hoping to get more news about it soon. Presumably, this series won't acknowledge the movie adaptations, which makes sense. It'd certainly give the team more to work with.
The beloved novel by Roald Dahl is getting the Netflix treatment. Admittedly this one looks like it's going to be a movie instead of a series, but we're including it because it's such exciting news! Book lovers everywhere, rejoice at seeing our little magical book lover hit the small screen. Did we mention that this time around, it's going to be animated?
While we're on the subject of Netflix adapting Roald Dahl novels into film, let's talk about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Because that's another movie on their remake list. It'll be interesting to see what they do different from the past two remakes, if nothing else. Oh!
And this adaptation is going to be animated as well.
BFG is the third Roald Dahl book that Netflix has their eyes on. Again, it looks like it's going to be a movie. But we're all sorts of okay with that. Fans of this delightful child's book may be feeling a bit conflicted about this news, but hopefully Netflix will stay loyal to the original material.
Netflix has been cornering the market for animated children's movies. Or at least that's how it's feeling right now. They're actively working on an animated adaptation of the classic Dr. Suess tale; Green Eggs and Ham.
The Last Kids on Earth, written by Max Brallier, is the next series on the line for Netflix adaptation. It'll be an animated series, but man does it have an amazing set of voice actors lined up. Mark Hamill, Bruce Campbell, Nick Wolfhard, and dozens of other actors have already signed onto the project.
One of Netflix's more recent acquisitions was the right to Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad. Barry Jenkins will be directing the adaptation, but that's about all we know so far. The novel follows Cora, a Georgia slave and her journey for freedom.
Netflix is set to adapt two best selling novels by Leigh Bardugo into one amazing series. The series will be called Shadow and Bone, after one of the novels the series is based off of. Both novels are part of her larger Grishaverse world, and fans are understandably very excited about this news.
Based off both the acclaimed book series and gaming franchise, The Witcher is coming to Netflix with former Superman Henry Cavill cast in the role of Geralt Of Rivia and Freya Allan as Ciri. It's set to drop in the Fall of 2019 and fans are waiting with bated breath if Netflix will do this Eastern European franchise justice.
