Comic book writer and artist Dan Jurgens comments on the just-announced Booster Gold DC Universe series, based on the character he created. The new HBO Max live-action series was part of the DCU's announced movies, TV shows, and animated series for the franchise's Chapter 1, titled Gods and Monsters. The Booster Gold DCU series is being hailed as a different type of superhero show, focusing on a superhero's imposter syndrome. DC Studios co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are in talks with an undisclosed actor for the role.Speaking with ComicBook.com, Jurgens shared his thoughts on the Booster Gold HBO Max series reveal, which came from a video by DCU creative head Gunn.

DC Comics' Booster Gold is known for his impeccable comedic timing, which stems from the character having a pretty good knowledge of how to deal with technology and its wonders, using that to his advantage to show off to the public in the comics. Jurgens believes that the character aspect is something that makes Booster fitting for his DCU series, given how the different types of media have flourished and the meta connection of Booster coming to HBO Max. Check out the full quote below:

"I have always felt that Booster belongs in media because, in many ways, that's exactly what the character is all about. Not only that, but in many ways, the character has more relevance now because of the way multiple media platforms have exploded and grown. So, I'm very excited to see how this plays out. Booster's sense of voice, demeanor and presence have always been very clear in my mind, so it'll be fun to see how it comes together and matches up."

How Booster Gold Debuted In The Comics

DC Comics' Booster Gold character

Booster Gold debuted in Booster Gold #1 in 1986 and was created by writer and artist Jurgens. Booster's real name is Michael Jon Carter, a character from a poor family in the 25th Century's futuristic take on Gotham City. After getting arrested for throwing football games in a betting scheme, Michael decides to steal technology from the Metropolis Space Museum superhero wing to time travel to the 20th Century and become a superhero himself. In his debut with the superhero name Goldstar, Michael saved US President Ronald Reagan, gaining immediate fame. Due to him being nervous in the president's presence, Michael ended up mixing his football nickname Booster and his superhero name Goldstar, which led to Reagan introducing him on television as Booster Gold.

Why Booster Gold Is Perfect For James Gunn’s DCU

Booster Gold looking menacingly at the front

Booster Gold and his robot companion full of personality, Skeets, are a match made in heaven with Gunn's tone of superhero fare. The fact that the DCU Chapter 1 is called Gods and Monsters explains why Booster Gold had to be introduced right away. The character's goal in the comics in going back to the past is exactly to be viewed as a God, which DCU's Chapter 1 will be focusing on. Booster time travels to the past to become a popular superhero, gaining the attention and wealth he could not have in his original timeline.

Booster Gold is a character that can present the DCU with a similar feel to Gunn's own Peacemaker series. On that show, John Cena's Peacemaker was a funny character to the outside world, while keeping a tragic backstory bottled up. Michael Carter grew up poor due to his father gambling all the family's money away and disappearing — only to reappear when Michael was in a good place as a university quarterback and rope him into one of his schemes, which got Booster in jail. The DCU's future has an emotional tale coming up when Booster Gold premieres on HBO Max.
