MGM’s recent financial troubles have been well documented here at Screen Rant, and after the most recent announcement that the second Hobbit film hasn’t even received a green light yet, things have not been looking good for the once-great studio. Now, IESB brings word that Bond 23 has been delayed indefinitely, leaving fans of James Bond wondering when we’ll see the debonair secret agent again on the big screen.
Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers on the Bond films since 1995, announced today that production on the next installment in the franchise has been suspended.
“Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on BOND 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of BOND 23.”
It’s a shame this project is being delayed; EON Productions has seen a few interesting developments in Bond 23, including rumor of Rachel Weisz as the villainous leader of Quantum and Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes as a possible director for the next installment. The script was heralded by co-writer Peter Morgan as having a “shocking story,” and I was looking forward to seeing how the story progressed after Quantum of Solace. Will the movie pick up immediately after Quantum of Solace left off, becoming a true sequel as Quantum itself was to Casino Royale?
Wilson and Broccoli have been responsible for some of the best Bond films in the past twenty years. Martin Campbell’s GoldenEye reinvigorated the series after a string of uninspired efforts in the mid-to-late 1980’s, and lightning struck twice when his Casino Royale had a similar effect back in 2006.
The James Bond franchise is the longest-running series in film history, so I’m confident we’ll see the martini-drinking 007 on the big screen again – it’s only a matter of time. Keep checking back at Screen Rant for updates on the progress of Bond 23; we’ll keep you updated when EON or MGM make the next announcement about the project.
In the meantime, I’ll throw it to you: sound off in the comments section. When do you think MGM will get their act together? Are you excited for Bond 23 to hit theaters?
