BoJack Abandoned Her For Over A Year And A Half
Sarah Lynn's tragic death is one of the saddest scenes in the series. The former Horsin' Around actress and pop star dies of a heroin overdose in Season 3's "That's Too Much, Man!" Stricken by grief and guilt, BoJack leaves Los Angeles for a year and a half and abandons his friends.
Diane tries to contact him repeatedly while he's away. Her marriage to Mr. Peanutbutter begins to fall apart, and she reaches out to her friend several times for support. BoJack doesn't answer her calls, however, and fails to be there for Diane when she needs him.
BoJack Is A Toxic Person
BoJack has proved throughout the series that, although he is capable of trying to be a better person, he is generally a toxic influence on the people around him. He is selfish and overlooks the needs of others. Diane may arguably be his closest friend but she is not exempt from the BoJack's poor behavior.
His younger sister, Hollyhock, recognizes the toxicity of the titular character. In the sixth and final season of the series, she cuts off contact with BoJack, and moves on with her life without her older brother's bad influence.
He Made Diane Feel Bad For Moving To Chicago
Diane leaves LA in the sixth and final season and moves to Chicago with her new boyfriend, Guy. In the series finale "Nice While It Lasted," she reunites with BoJack and tells him about the ominous voicemail he left on her phone where he inadvertently condemned her for leaving Hollywood and not being there to save him.
Diane tells BoJack that she thought he was dead for hours. This sobering moment highlights the co-dependent and toxic elements of their friendship.
Diane Can't Forget The Things BoJack Has Done
Diane and BoJack may be friends, but they have startlingly different moral compasses. Diane is an outspoken feminist and BoJack has hurt and manipulated women for most of his adult life. She struggles to get past his actions in New Mexico, and is further disappointed when she learns about his involvement in Sarah Lynn's death.
BoJack and Diane argue at the premiere of Philbert in Season 5. She confronts the him about his actions with Penny in New Mexico, and the two friends almost fall out for good.
She Is Happier Without BoJack In Her Life
In the final season of BoJack Horseman, Diane begins to move forward with her life. She meets her new boyfriend, and he supports her through her struggles with depression. Diane writes a new book series, and eventually moves away and marries Guy.
Diane seems much happier in the series finale. A large part of that can be contributed to her estrangement from BoJack, who was often a hindering influence in her life.
BoJack Is A Bad Influence
BoJack encourages the worst parts of Diane. She often goes to him during her darkest days throughout the series and, like Sarah Lynn, is encouraged to drink alcohol excessively as a way to cope with her problems.
BoJack and Diane get drunk together after Mr. Peanutbutter's house collapses in an earthquake due to the fracking in the backyard. She retreats to BoJack's house while having difficulties with her marriage to Mr. Peanutbutter instead of staying and resolving the issues.
He Takes His Friends For Granted
BoJack takes nearly all of the people in his life for granted. He has hurt Diane, Princess Carolyn, and Todd numerous times throughout the series. Although he cares for them, his selfishness has fractured his friendships almost beyond repair.
Diane helps BoJack despite her better judgment, and remains his friend even after his involvement in Sarah Lynn's death is revealed to the public. Admittedly, the titular character learns to appreciate his friends more in the series finale.
Diane Leaked Her Chapters Of BoJack's Book After He Told Her Not To
Diane and BoJack first meet in Season 1 after she is hired to ghostwrite his memoir, One Trick Pony. She writes a gritty and realistic book that depicts BoJack truthfully, much to his upset. He asks her to rewrite it but she leaks the first few chapters on the internet anyway.
Diane's book ultimately helps BoJack's career and earns him a Golden Globe. She still went against her friend's wishes, however, and hurt BoJack after he grew to trust her.
They Drift Apart
Diane and BoJack meet in Season 1 and become close and unlikely friends. But they drift apart throughout the series, especially in Season 6 after Diane leaves Los Angeles and moves to Chicago.
In the series finale, BoJack and Diane have an emotional and cathartic reunion on the rooftop where they reminisce about their past. Although they had a strong friendship, the two characters have undeniably drifted apart from each other.
