Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars War of the Bounty Hunters #1

Boba Fett’s iconic ship Slave I is destroyed in a newly released preview for the upcoming Star Wars comic event, War of the Bounty Hunters. As the crossover approaches, readers can get a first glimpse at the destruction that occurred offscreen between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Ever since the Original Trilogy, fans had presumed that Boba Fett went from Cloud City straight to Jabba’s Palace with Han Solo’s carbonite-frozen body without any problem. However, things didn’t go down this smoothly in current canon, as retconned by the approaching crossover. As the four series of Star Wars, Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra, and Bounty Hunters begin to intersect, readers will see the conclusion to this unravelling string of events. Since the carbonite block containing the rebel smuggler has gotten out of Boba’s possession, a lot is going to have to go down before Luke, Leia, Lando, and Chewie can conduct a rescue mission to retrieve their friend on Tatooine.

In the preview for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #1 released by StarWars.com, Jabba the Hutt has placed a bounty on Boba after learning that he’s failed his mission. As two bounty hunters receive notification of the new hit while in a cantina, one decides to give it a shot and blast Boba Fett, standing at the bar. Of course, this isn’t going to be an easy task for the “biggest open bounty” that’s open to anyone who can manage the task. After Boba effortlessly blasts the threat without hesitation, he heads back to his parked ship, only to encounter Zuckuss who has rigged Slave I to explode. Strangely enough, it doesn’t seem his fellow bounty hunter wants him dead. “Zuckuss thinks Boba Fett should stay down if he wants to survive the next few minutes.” The event's first issue is written by Charles Soule with art by Luke Ross, featuring a cover by Steve McNiven as seen below, depicting the explosion:

It was previously established that given the amount of people who Han Solo had upset throughout the galaxy, Boba Fett’s trip to Jabba’s Palace could involve some trouble. However, Zuckuss blowing up his peer’s ship brings to mind a series of questions. It would be easy to assume that Zuckuss simply wants the money that Jabba would give him for Han, but in that case, he might as well finish Boba in his compromised state. Of course, bounty hunters have their own code of honor that might forbid Zuckuss from going through with this, and permit him to show mercy instead. Knowing the ruthless Boba Fett, Zuckuss might not survive the event, especially after this.

By the time that fans see Boba Fett again in Return of the Jedi, there aren’t any more appearances of Slave I. Chronologically, Boba’s ship still shows up again later in the timeline, in The Mandalorian’s second season. Despite the issue’s cover making it appear that the whole ship has been decimated, the panel makes it look as if only the entrance has been damaged. This could add new context to why Boba Fett chooses to stay at Jabba’s Palace for the time being, if his ship is being repaired by the time it returns in The Mandalorian. Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters officially begins with its first issue releasing on June 2.
