Logan co-writer and director James Mangold is heading to a galaxy far, far away, where he will write and direct a Boba Fett solo movie. An anthology film centered around the infamous Mandalorian armor-clad bounty hunter has been rumored for years and was in development under the direction of filmmaker Josh Trank at one point; Lucasfilm even prepared a Boba Fett sizzle reel to show off at Star Wars Celebration 2015, to announce that version of the project. That was before Trank departed in the wake of the Fantastic Four reboot fiasco, and the Fett movie was put on the back-burner by Lucasfilm.

The studio's second Star Wars anthology film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, begins playing in theaters tonight (at the time of writing), but Lucafilm has yet to announce what the third spinoff movie in the franchise will be. While an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie - one set between the events of the prequel and original Star Wars trilogies - is still a real possibility, it seems that a Boba Fett solo film is now actively moving forward again as well. More importantly, it has a well established filmmaker working on the script, with the intention of directing it.

According to THR, Mangold is set to both write and direct a Boba Fett solo movie for Lucasfilm. There are no other details about the film available at the moment, including where it would take place during the Star Wars timeline. The Boba Fett character first appeared in animated form in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, though his first live-action appearance (and what, for most people, was their first time seeing him at all) was in The Empire Strikes Back two years later. He has since appeared in various other media, including several comic books, novels, and the canon animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Boba Fett the character got an official backstory in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, where it was revealed (in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, to be exact) that he was really the clone of another bounty hunter, Jango Fett, the very basis for the Republic's clone army during the Clone Wars. He infamously met his demise at the clawed mouth of the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi, though Boba Fett managed to survive the event and recover in the old Star Wars Expanded Universe (now officially dubbed Star Wars Legends).

Mangold is preparing to film his Ford vs. Ferrari biopic this summer, but the Boba Fett movie could be the project he works on after that. The underworld of bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe certainly lends itself to Mangold; a filmmaker who's shown his mastery at weaving together elements of the western, noir, and crime genres in everything from cop dramas (Cop Land) to cowboy adventures (3:10 to Yuma) and even X-Men films (The Wolverine, Logan). However one feels about a Boba Fett movie - and feelings are most definitely mixed among Star Wars fans - Mangold is just about the perfect choice for the job, based on his credentials.
