Temuera Morrison explains why Boba Fett wants to run Jabba the Hutt's empire in The Book of Boba Fett. The fan-favorite bounty hunter returned to the Star Wars universe with his own TV series on Disney+ on December 29. Set up in a credits scene in The Mandalorian season 2, Boba Fett's current mission is to become Mos Espa's crime lord — a role previously held by Jabba the Hutt.

Following years of rumors, Lucasfilm finally confirmed that Boba Fett did survive his sarlacc pit fall in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 1, "Chapter 9: The Marshal." The outing wrapped up with a shot of Boba Fett looking over the Tatooine dunes while Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu traveled back to their ship. Subsequently, Boba Fett and Mando's paths crossed as the former attempted to re-acquire his father's suit from the latter. They briefly teamed up against Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and eventually parted ways. The Mandalorian season 2 finale then effectively announced The Book of Boba Fett spin-off starring the titular character and his trusted ally, Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen).

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Boba actor Morrison was asked why Boba Fett wanted to return to Tatooine and take over Jabba the Hutt's crime organization in The Book of Boba Fett. The actor understandably wasn't able to get into narrative specifics, but he hinted that his character has a bigger plan in mind. In a classic question-dodging response, Morrison suggested fans "ask the writer" about Boba's future. Read his comment below:

"That’s a very good question. We’re going to start somewhere, I guess. We’re going to be branching out and looking at other things to do. But yeah, we’ll start small and then we’ll venture out. If you focus on the job, you’d better ask the writer that."

While Morrison was extremely careful not to reveal any plot details, it sounds like Lucasfilm has a multi-season narrative for The Book of Boba Fett in mind. According to the actor, his character opted to start taking over Jabba the Hutt's empire as some sort of stepping stone towards a bigger target. It's curious what that may be, and with just two episodes of the Star Wars/Disney+ series aired so far, there have so far not been too many hints as to what Boba Fett's ultimate end point is. Morrison could be referring to Boba taking over a more established underground organization. Interestingly, this lends credence to rumors of Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) somehow being involved in The Book of Boba Fett. In 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, Clarke's Qi'ra became a lieutenant in the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate.

Right now, however, Lucasfilm is focused on establishing Boba Fett's reign in Mos Espa. Considering the persisting questions about his past since surviving the sarlacc pit, this is arguably the best creative move for The Book of Boba Fett at this point. After that, perhaps the show can branch out to other planets, since Morrison has already teased a promising "venture out" into some more exciting adventures for Boba Fett.
