The Book of Boba Fett star Temuera Morrison reveals that he cut some of his own dialogue behind creator Jon Favreau's back. The Book of Boba Fett is the most recent addition to the Star Wars universe on Disney+. It follows the exploits of the fan favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett as he returns to Tatooine in an attempt to claim Jabba the Hutt's old turf.
Since Boba Fett's release in December of 2021, fans have had a very mixed response to the series. While many fans praise several aspects of the show (such as its depiction of Tusken Raiders), the overwhelming response has been that the series' title character has been given far too much dialogue. Since Fett's original appearance in The Empire Strikes Back, his character has always carried a certain element of mystery with him as he speaks so little. Due to this, it seems fans are now quite skeptical about just how many long chunks of dialogue creator Favreau has decided to give the bounty hunter.
Fans of Star Wars are not alone in this opinion. In a recent interview with NME, Boba Fett actor Morrison revealed that he also agreed that the character was speaking too much. According to Morrison, he even tried to remove some of his own lines from the script while Favreau was away from set. Morrison stated that he attempted to remove entire paragraphs from the script, telling a crew member, "and Jon's gone to Atlanta, so don't tell him!" See Morrison's full quote below:
“'I’ve got all these paragraphs here! I think we should get rid of it. And Jon’s gone to Atlanta, so don’t tell him!’ Next morning on set, I get a call from Atlanta: ‘Uh, Jon wants you to say all that dialogue.'”
Reportedly, Favreau did not agree with the criticism, and insisted the lines be filmed as written. While fans disagree, it's easy to understand why Favreau would have faith in his own writing. Favreau is also the creator of the massively successful Star Wars spinoff, The Mandalorian, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans.
The Book of Boba Fett has still yet to be officially renewed for a second season (which may be due, in part, to the fans' criticism of the series), leaving it yet unclear whether or not Favreau will hear what fans are saying and alter his interpretation of the character. If the series is renewed, it may be hard for Favreau to avoid, given that even his lead actor agrees. As it stands, the series still has three episodes left to release, with the season finale coming out on February 9th. If these episodes are received well, it may just give the series the momentum it needs for fans to get a second season of The Book of Boba Fett.
